Are you worried about the belt failure? I'd be more worried about the water pump.

Yes -- convert it to a LS1 motor.

No timing chain that i'm aware of.

To be honest replacing the timing belt isn't that hard of a job. I have done 4 t-belts on a 928 so far all with ease. Just take your time and lable your baggies and it will be a breeze.

There are two types of 928 engines. You have interference an non-interference. One will bend valves and damage pistons when the other (non) will just strand you. Neither are prone to breaking when they are done correctly and when they due. If you have no history on a 928, do both the TB and Water Pump, plus rebuild the tensioner. Then you don't have to worry about it. There is "no" timing change kit for these cars.
