1984 930 starter replacement?

My brother has a 1984 930 that is kick *** fast. He had the motor, turbo, and tranny all redone. When the turbo kicks in it more exciting than a roller coaster ride. Anyway last night I was over his house and he couldnt not get the car to start. The starter kept spinning not engaging with the flywheel. We went under to tap the starter to see if we can get it to work but no sucess.
We were trying to figure out how to remove the starter. The lower bolt is acessable but the upper bolt is not. Do we need to remove something to get to the upper bolt????? My brother thinks that you may have to remove the engine to replace the starter. I feel there has to be a better way. Any advise will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Upper bolt (actually it is a nut) is a 10mm hex (allen). You can get it with a allen socket and longer extension on the passenger side, or by going up over the transmission from the driver side. Very easy replacement.
