Yeah you would expect a Porsche dealer to be able to tell something like that. I should have known when the 'service representative' told me he had only been working there 2 months. Although I would have expected the mechanic to know better. Bottom line.......stay away from the Porsche dealer on wayzata drive in Minnetonka, Minnesota when it comes to your 930 or other airhead needs.

I agree. I tend to look on the bright side...which in this case is if I didnt have to take the engine out I would have never gotten great shots like these:

what a great looking car --- post some pics of the inside. how much did the engine out service cost? what did your mechanic have to actually do?

Good question Doc....the mechanic charged $4200 for the entire service, but the only thing that was actually needed was to fix the sticky rocker causing the leak down test results showing almost zero compression in one cylnder. That alone required an engine out service which was the bulk of the cost. Since he was already taking everything out we figured this was a good time to make some other mods that would help the overall health of the engine and hopefully increase the longevity of the engine: changed all bolts to new stainless bolts, changed a bunch of metal parts to newer thicker/stronger parts that had been updated by Porsche over the years, removed the heat exchangers from the exhaust which were dented and looked awful, refinished/painted a lot of parts that were showing their age and any metal parts that were damaged were welded back in to shape and reinforced where needed. The front transmission mount was cracked so it was reinforced and welded and made stronger than before. The old stock engine mounts were replaced with solid mounts to let you feel the car rumble more and be more in touch with the road. I cannot emphasize enough how nice of a change that was. You not only hear the engine more but also feel the vibration through the frame of the car and the transmission is felt and heard a lot more. Some people may not like that but I love that. Before when you turned hard in to a corner the engine being on softer mounts would actually have a little play in it but now when you turn the car...everything turns with it immediately... When you are turning if you give it some gas, the torque pushes the car down in the rear enough to raise the front end just enough to lose the grip of the front tires and you lose the ability to turn briefly. That may sound dangerous but if you're starting a hard acceleration mid turn in a 930 turbo you're already doing something wrong so it should be avoided anyways. The best way I can explain it is that the whole package feels tighter and very solid. I highly recommend the solid engine mounts.

I've found out fairly quickly that owning a 930 is somethign special. I bought the car a month ago, already dumped another $4200 in to it, have another list of things I want to do it that will suck every penny I dont have for the next few years and I still love the car to death.

To anyone who has been thinking of buying one of these, DO IT....you wont regret it!

Does anyone have recommendations with regards to racing seats/sport seats that will work well with a 4point or 5point harness? I currently have power, non-sport seats that I am either thinking of sending to a place classiccarseats.com to convert my seats to sport seats or just buy seats from Sparco, Recaro, etc... I'd love to hear from people who have been down this road before.

That's a beautiful car you have there. I bought a similar white one (1988) with 9500 miles on it about 9 months ago. Stunning car as well. I plan to leave it bone stock (as it came) but the solid mounts are tempting. Can you point me to the brand\vendor you went with?
Thx,
V
