'79 930 Turbo

Seriously thinking of buying this. I think I can get him down to 35k. The only issue is the exhaust. It probably won't pass Maryland emissions. All cars '77 and newer must be tested. Original 1 owner car, complete service history from day 1. Thoughts?

CaptainCalf is infamous around these parts
IMHO, it depends on what your plans are for the car. If it's to be a garage queen for investment returns, then it looks okay if you don't mind investing the money it would take to turn it back with original wheels and front end valance. The key here is the records being complete...

However, if you plan to drive it and modify it to make it more dependable & more powerful the you may be better off looking for a later model 930 since the costs could be astronomical on a 1979, depending on how far you want to go...

I like to drive my projects, so if it were me I'd look around for a later model that somebody has already gone through

Good luck,
RC

looks like a decent car. I think somebody makes an exhaust with a cat that would pass. in nys, 86 and older are just safety.

I just discovered that in Maryland if the car is 20 years or older it qualifies for "historic" tags, making it exempt from an inspection or emission.

Well, did you get it?
That is one nice 79, all the good upgrades, I wouldn't waste my time trying to put it back to stock, it looks great!

Yep, picked it up and drove it home Saturday. Hit 120 mph on the way home and she was steady as a rock. I'm going to do a couple of things to her to get her near stock, but I love the wheels and the Ruf front grill. They're staying on the car. I took my wife for a ride in it and she could not get over the fact that it was a 32 year old car (no squeaks or rattles). The car is near mint. I estimate that if I drop somewhere between 3 to 5 thousand dollars on her, she will be perfect. My 996 Gt2 was nice, but this baby is fun to drive with a ton of character. What do you think of that Fabspeed longneck intercooler?

the one I really like is the rarlyl8 motorsports intercooler, very cool
I hear you, my tts is boring as hell compared to my 930. on the weekends I always reach for the 930 keys
btw what are you pealing off? I thought it had a lot of the right upgrades
enjoy

He put all kinds of electrical gadgetary in the car. Additional gauges on the glove box, graphic equalizer in the center console area and a bunch of other less than tasteful mods. All that stuff is coming out and getting replaced. I just spent a grand at DC auto getting a bunch of interior parts, glove box, gauge bezel, right knee pad, center console (cubby hole and Ac/fan portion), and a rear lens with the Porsche script to replace the one that is cracked.

I'm somewhat of a perfectionist, so here we go. The car runs perfectly. Starts right up, idles at 850, shifts smoothly and accelerates hard. I have a pretty good reference point and this thing is impressive for how old she is. The front spoiler needs paint and repair from being scraped. He also still has the Blaupunkt Tuscon radio in there, I was trying to figure out how I could connect an Itouch to it so I could listen to music. Still trying to decide on what intercooler to go with and if I should install 1 bar spring. I don't want the engine to run lean, so still making decisions.

Hey 9Eleven, make sure to check out our Fabspeed Exhaust for the 930. We have few different options which will produce a nice sound and a big HP increase, in addition to keeping the car emissions compliant. But on the 930, I would do the Headers and our Supercup Exhaust with 200 Cell Sport Cat so you can pass all emissions test without any problems. That setup will make a big HP and TQ increase and get rid of the turbo lag. Give me a call or shoot me a PM and I'll give you more information on everything and give you special member pricing if your interested.
We also have a great Intercooler upgrade for it.
Thanks,

I don't need no stinkin' catalytic converters. Historic vehicles are exempt in Maryland. Do you have an exhaust without them?

Thats a good thing and we sure do. I thought you said in your earlier post you need to pass emissions so that's why I recommended that setup. But the best setup to go with is our full 3.0" Dual outlet exhaust from the turbo back. It has no catalytic converter, so it will wake up the turbo immediately. It has a nice sporty and deep sound, but not loud, so you will be able to hear the turbo spool up much sooner and whistle when you let off the gas. It comes with nice 4.5" rolled edge tips that really fill in the bumper cutouts nicely. Let me know what you decide to do and PM me if your interested and I will make you a nice member discount on it.
Thanks,
