'78+, stay away from '80-'85 unless you get a screaming deal or you know of the car's history, those were grey-market years, imported through different channels and sometimes with botched federalization processes, etc. Ideally you want a '78- '79, or better yet, '86-'89. The jewel is the '89, because it comes with the G50 hydraulic gearbox, although the 4-speed in all the other years is surprisingly a very good transmission and has great factory ratios.

PPI is golden, I usually like to test-drive as many cars as I can and the top 3 I feel good about, get a PPI and then start negotiating down based on what needs to be done, etc.

Any euro car thats in the states and has been registered is no different than a US spec car. 78-79 and euro cars also have a better exhaust and fuel system that supports more horsepower. Euro cars weigh less as well. I am not a fan of the 5 speed trannys and prefer the 4 speeds. The 4's are stronger and feel much better. Not having to shift as often is great.

Yeh less shifting lets you concentrate more on driving and dynamics wrather than having to shift as much and keeps your hands on the wheel as well

I like the 5spd box, my car on a short track like Lime Rock, is spooled up all the time, that's with a Ruf K29 hybrid.

I hear that a lot about my car, "aren't you afraid of it being a euro?" My answer is no, the car came here in '85, any problems/issues due to a botched federalization would have come up within 10 years, not 20+ years later.
