3in round air cone vs. stock air box

My stock air box is starting to get a little old. Some of its mounting brackets have broken(it raddles a bit), it's scratched and ugly... I have been on ebay and there are 10$ air cone adaptor kits. Has anyone had any experience with these things? It seems like a cheap way to lose a little weight and make my engine compartment look a little better. Any ideas/ cheap substitutes?

The problem is that once the engine bay heats up, you are sucking in hot air which hurts your hp (stock airbox takes cold air from the fender). Any increases gained by going to the higher flowing filter, is lost by heat soak. I've tested it on the dyno, and once heat soaked, the cone filters lost hp every time.

My ex '88 Turbo had one of those K&N cone filters and gave me problems which were solved when I reverted back to the stock airbox.

This is an option i was thinking of trying to prevent drawing in all that heat!

One of my old 944 Turbos was tuned in stages up to 417 BHP, as we reached the limit of performance each time, a bit of detective work found the next obstacle to power, at about 340 BHP we found the power was rolling off and the next round of experiments began.

We found that changing the air filter box for a 3inch inlet K&N cone filter, lifted the power to 358 BHP.

Some thermocouples in the engine bay found that the area in front of the engine when moving stays nice and cool, not far off of ambient temps, only stopping for 5 mins after a run had the temp rising again. So in real world terms, I do not think that performance was reduced due to high engine bay temps.

One problem I did have with another turbo, was a small part of the old airbox broke away, was sucked into the intake, turned the compressor blades into aluminium dust which went through to the engine and scored the hell out of the bores.. one lunched engine and turbo!

Moral of the story, sort something out with the airbox, even if its just a new one, they were still available a couple of years ago, maybe they still are?
