964 questions!!!

Hey everyone,
I'm a porsche Noob and a have some qeustions. I'm in the market for a clean 964 and have stumbled upon a nice example for a decent price. My only concern is that its a 94 with 110000 miles. Would the mileage scare you off if its been well maintained? What kind of things should I be worried about on a car like this? Its a C4 BTW!!! This would be a summer daily/weekend car!

Thanks in advance!

Derek

Derek,

The mileage isn't a concern if all of the normal maintenance and repair items have been done. At 110k miles it has either had an engine top-end rebuild or likely needs one. Make sure to check out the service history and get a PPI done with a compression and leak-down test!

It seems there are more and more Calgarian 964 owners these days

Derek,

I know the car you are talking about and it looks to be in great shape by the pictures. I wish I had some extra cash for it. Its not that far from Calgary and the price seems really good for what you'd be getting. Rob's got you on the right track with a good plan of attack.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.

I believe the AWD system can be an expensive fix if there is something wrong with it, a PPI is a must.

If you have a chance I would try to test and see if the ABS system works, a lot of people seem to be getting the PDAS/ABS problem that I am currently dealing with and a quick way to test it would be to activate the ABS.

Check for oil leak on 964, minor leak is common, just make sure no major leak.

Take to heart warnings on the 964 engine

The 964 is a classic stile, appearance wise. but true to porsche engineering we owners were used as test beds. the 964 engine has a couple of serious design flaws. one the valve covers are mag, new ones are plastic and no rust issues. another is the seal between the cylinder head and case = there is none and the two must be machined down and a new type of O ring used to seal the two.
but the car is great enjoy it every mile.
