With any Vivid Project Car, we got to start with a baseline. This helps us know what we have gained, improved, and more over, how freakin fast our car is! Here at our Gilbert, Arizona facility we use a Mustang all wheel drive dyno. This dyno is one of the most accurate dynamometers for tuning and testing. Having a database full of dyno runs since 2006, we can really compare past cars to know where we stand on average when it comes to modded runs or baseline runs.

The 2014 Porsche 991 Turbo comes with a turbocharged 3.8-litre six-cylinder with direct petrol injection producing 520 hp. Together with a new thermal management system for the turbo engine, fuel efficiency technologies have reduced average fuel consumption up to 16% to 9.7 liter per 100km. Compared to previous models, the power level of the 911 Turbo was boosted by 20 hp and its torque was increased 10 Newton metres up to 660Nm. The increased power of the new 911 Turbo was achieved primarily through improving engine efficiency with higher combustion pressures, new valve timing and ignition angle tuning. In the engine of the S model, charge pressure was increased to 1.2 bar to enhance power and maximum engine speed was increased 200 rpm to 7,200 rpm.

With our new Porsche 991 Turbo strapped down for some runs what would it make on the dyno as we posted on our Facebook and Instagram page. Testing in Sport Mode to take advantage of the 0.15 bar increase for 20seconds in the midrange, the cars first run made 469awhp and 530ft/lbs of torque. With a 20% drivetrain loss as seen on the Mustang, we were definitely higher than that 416hp number. To show the effects of leaving a car in sport mode and doing run after run after run, you can see how the EGT temperatures affects the turbos and ECU dropping absorbanent amount of power each time.

Finally for fun, we decided to try out the Mustang Dyno 1/4 mile test. With a basic tree on the screen, its just like the real thing, kinda. Using Sport Plus for fast shifts, when the light goes green, its pedal down. Even with the rollers, traction is a issue. The car definitely slipped in 1st-3rd gears. Purely for fun, it could be used to further test out mods without leaving the shop. I was pleased to know that even with a computer simulated drag race, I have the reaction time of a moose but ran a 12.5 sec pass. Guess I will stick to my day job! Check out the pics and videos and keep tabs on our official Project 991 Turbo Gallery Here.

Our 991 Turbo baseline dyno is complete and now it is time to mod and get some more power. All of the design, fabricating, and testing is being completed here at our Arizona facility. We have a handful of goals to obtain as we start the product development stage. Because the car is so new and tuning is a issue, we want to make everything to be modular and CEL free. With any turbocharged vehicle, the exhaust is a restriction. There is a fine balance between performance and sound. With the engineering Porsche has done in the new 991 including the economy mode, drone will be even more present than before. If you are not in Sport Mode, the car can be running at 1500rpm as your cruising at 40mph down the road. Previous 997 Turbo had a drone spot of around 2200-2800rpm. So reducing backpressure to gain performance while keeping a clean sound for daily driving is priority 1.

Typically a X-Pipe design gives the car a bit of a muffled tone. That is because of the turbulence where the X junction is. Many people like this sound, however the turbulence can affect performance. The only time we have heard a significant sound change is with a titanium exhaust (coming next) because of how the material resonates the sound. We chose to do our system in a full 3 inch stainless steel as a U bend with dual resonators. From the catalytic converter, the exhaust gas goes through 1 resonator, U turns through another resonator, and then out the exhaust tip. This gives each turbo its own full 3" outlet. With the U-turn and 2 resonators, this should create a clean sound. Utilizing this with the stock catalytic converters will give some increases over stock while keeping you emission clean and CEL free. The exhaust is being designed to work with the factory tips as well as a custom exhaust tip we will be making.

In addition to the muffler setup, the 991 Turbo will receive some high flow cat pipes. Like the 997.2 Turbo, the muffler and cats are separate allowing for a nice modular type system. The Metal Core Catalytic Converters have been designed to provide a reliable solution to the most common converter problems experienced by other brands with out having an absorbanent cost. They are considered a 300cell but as bench tested, flow more than the HJS 200 cell cat. Each cat is full stainless steel construction, including the substrate which is furnace braised to the mantle for outstanding durability. They feature a unique end-cap design so it can't rattle around. The GESI proprietary precious metal loading technology used in these catalytic converters ensures greatly reduced emissions, eliminating most "Check Engine Light" issues. With the catalytic converters mounted straight to the turbos, these are capable of withstanding up to 1500F which is about the EGT temperature at full power. The secondary O2 sensor mount will have a built in defowler bung for extra measures to prevent any CEL's from coming on due to cat inefficiency.

Once the exhaust is finished, we will be working on a beautiful 3 into 1 header to replace the clam-sandwhich headers to help improve turbo spool and gain more power. Each part that we make will be independantly tested and we will do some stock to fully modified PBox testing and 1/4 mile testing. Enjoy the pictures and please comment away with input!

Looks like you guys are doing this very methodically and carefully. The construction looks like it is well engineered. I can not wait to see how each of the parts improves the cars individually as well as together with all the improved pieces on at the same time (including the tune eventually as well)!

996 Turbos sold new in Australia for around $300,000.
A 996 turbo S with a few options could sell for $350,000.
2nd hand 996tt's now sell for between $75,000 to $125,000

The new 991 turbo's sell for almost $400,000 on road.
Australian new car prices are crazy expensive!

Here are some more proshots of the exhaust system. We have a connecting bracket that will join the 2 sides to finish it off nicely. We designed this to work with OEM tips. But we are trying to figure out what type of aftermarket exhaust tip would look cool? Big 3.5" quad, triple tip, half moon tip, fat oval? Comments?

3.5" quad or fat ovals would look great if done in the right manner.
