I have a white 991 turbo on order.. with the standard wheels. Sadly, I wasn't able to order the car with black rims. Was thinking of either painting the rims or buying new ones. Anyone done either?

Where do u live? If u get snow then I would get a set of the classic wheels painted black. Put the snows on your current wheels and the summer tires on the black classic wheels.

Or just buy a set of black HREs. Personally, I'm not a fan of aftermarket wheels.

 

In the Bay Area, California. I didn't like the classic wheels, though they were the only OEM option for black wheels. Heard of anyone painting or powder coating the standard turbo rims?

 

Didn't see that you thought of painting the wheels. Which wheels did u get? The standard TT wheels really cant be painted, when u order them painted back just the inside that's not finished metal gets painted black instead of gray. The TTS center lock wheels already are painted black on the inside. The classic wheels look nice painted black. There are some pics floating around of black ones.

 

I guess you theoretically could paint or powder coat the std TT wheels. I don't think it would look good though. I think they're too busy and you'll drive yourself nuts trying to clean them. I have the inside of my AMG wheels black and they are a ***** to clean and when they are dirty look like crap. I couldn't imagine if they were all black.

 

I actually have a white/black 991 Turbo also at Switzer currently. We are going with a brushed, anodized black and cleared 1 piece concave wheel. Simple, lighter and 12 or 12.5's in the rear for either a 325 or 335. Paint or powdercoated gloss black would look great in my opinion! Not a big fan of the matte unless used along with gloss in a multi piece. Just looks dirty, again just my opinion. I will get pics as soon as they arrive for you.

Is that center lock or normal? I didn't get the center lock wheels with my turbo.

 

its 5 lug not center lock .

 

I've both powder coated and painted wheels black in the past. The only one I haven't done is wrapping them which is becoming more popular, but whether it works or not depends on the design of the wheels and the skill of the wrapper. Powder coating is a lot more expensive, but a lot more durable and easy to clean. It's definitely the way to go if you're willing to spend the money. I've had rims painted professionally and done it myself, and honestly if I were to do it again, I'd paint them myself again. I did it with a spray gun with automotive paint once, and once with high quality spray paint (I'm pretty sure it was 3M products both times). I've done a decent amount of paint work myself with spray guns and cans which helps, but honestly it's pretty easy and the biggest mistake to avoid is putting too much paint on with each coat. Several light coats is FAR better than one heavy coat. I'm more of a DIY'er than most people though and have worked on cars extensively for over 20 years from wrenching to body work to paint.

I got the HRE P101s for 5 lug in 20". They are MUCH lighter than the OEM, about 3-4 lbs per wheel, and it made a noticeable difference in subjective performance.

 

Ahh, thanks! Are there any downsides with them vs oem? Do the original tires fit? Would like to just remount the OEM tires instead of buying new ones. Also, any more pics? =D thx!
