Great quandry

I have been a forum member for about a year, and a Porsche fanatic my whole life. I have only recently owned a 2012 Cayenne Turbo, and I currently drive a Macan Turbo. I am finally in the position to get my ultimate dream car, a 911 TTs cab. My great quandry is whether to buy a pre-owned 2014-15 or wait for the supposed upcoming facelift. I would love to order one to my specs, but not sure I want to wait until the end of the year (?) for he MY2016. The two thins that would irk me would be if the facelift had the 918 steering wheel and more powerful engine. I know this is a very personal decision, but this forum always seems to give balanced feedback. Thank you for your input.

I just got a 2015 TT and pondered the same questions. The steering wheel would be nice and seems likely as does a small increase in power. Since you have a Macan you are probably in the best position to judge whether the steering wheel is a dealer maker.

I decided to go ahead as the value of my trade was as high as it was going to get and I got a reasonable amount off an ordered 2015. If you can wait, that might make sense although there will always be a newer version coming.

I do like the new 918 style wheel. I am leaning toward waiting, but there do seem to be some good deals right now.

Nice quandary to have. Not sure when the 991.2's will roll off the line for the US, but guess '16's about mid-year, so not a long wait if that is what transpires. I assume that '16 allocations will be known around early April. Yes, 991.2 TTS likely to be boosted a bit so more power and a few cosmetic refinements. Maybe even some change to PDK mapping or an option to select such, although the PDK now is very good. The 918 steering wheel would be nice, but the reach from the steering wheel to the volume control is quite small so I do not feel deprived without steering wheel control of volume. Probably a few more options or packages and probably a slightly higher base price, which seems to be the pattern, even from the '14 to '15 TTS, although there were no real changes aside from some interior combinations. There is little question that you could get a better deal on an in-stock or ordered '15 TTS, but if the latest model will make you happy, get the 991.2, even if it does not get delivered until autumn. Best to have no regrets for such an important decision. Of course, you could wait for the 991.2TTS press reviews before deciding and still get a '15 if that is what you then want.

I am more of a live for today guy. I was also thinking about a 991.2 turbo s and decided its not worth the wait of about one year. Options, colors, are all personal and all should be respected by the individual buyer. To me, when I bought my Ferrari, the decision was not because of the steering wheel. Even though it is real cool with LED's and all functions, including wipers, directional. on the wheel. We're blessed to have these choices.

I really appreciate the input. The steering wheel certainly is not a deal breaker, but I do like it. Also, the MACarbon custom steering wheels for the current 991 are awesome. I do not think I loose much by at least waiting a few months to see if the facelift gets introduced. What I do not understand is the rumor that it won't be shown until September. How can that be for a MY2016?

New 2015s this year weren't being delivered until late summer of 2014. I believe AndrewP got one of the first 2015s. However if the revised version won't be announced until the Frankfort auto show which is scheduled for September 17 - September 27, 2015 then it seems likely this version won't be shipping until after that. Likely January 2016 or so.

The question is do you really want to wait that long? If there is a HP increase, what do we think it will be based upon the current engine design, 40 HP more? Look at the performance difference now between the TT vs. the TTS which is 40 HP. That difference wouldn't be enough for me to wait until 2016 to enjoy this great car.

Styling updates seem to very subtle also. Would these subtle differences be enough to wait until 2016?

Only you can decide.

For me, I would get the best deal I could now and enjoy driving this great Porsche as soon as possible. Then when there are plenty of allocations for the revised version and deals are better (early allocations are likely not to be as highly discounted), I would work a deal to trade my 2015, if I thought the changes were compelling to me.

Buy it NOW

You only live once Mr Bond

Seriously, if you want more power just get an aftermarket exhaust and tune and the new car will seem slow in comparison and you may be able to add the 918 type steering wheel next year... good deals at sub MSRP out there now

Good Luck

If memory serve me correctly, the regular 911s get updates first. Then a year later the cosmetic tweaks trickle down to the Turbo range. So actually would be looking at 2017 for big changes. This is solely based upon prior model changes. Regardless you will be getting a killer car!

Unfortunately for me it's been awhile since I took out my 15 TT cab; once it made it back stateside from Euro Delivery it's been too cold to drive!

The 991 TTS is in another dimension. Sure, more power and better traction are always good, but such gains may not be that dramatic for regular use with the 991.2. In the meantime, which might be over a year, you could be teleporting in a TTS. FWIW, last year until April I was told that I had to wait until Oct/Nov for a '15 TTS. Well, I got an early allocation in April, ordered it on Apr 15 and took delivery on July 15. Could have had an ordered 14 in June at that point but another month was worth a model year to me.

I've got the same challenge.....these are by their very definition, high quality problems!! I've decided to wait for the '16 at this point. For full disclosure, I have a '14PTT. I'm going to through a FVD tune on it and enjoy for another 10 months.
