991 in lime gold metallic
I really don't mind it. I want to see it in person and in the turbo and GT3 variants. Can't make everyone happy and no matter what was done would have been "***** slapped" by many anyway. Need to see it and touch it.
(I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the participants on this thread because the car was very new when this thread started - maybe shocked some loyalists, but)
Went back and read this thread - hah- So funny how humans hate change. This car is near perfection. Interesting colors for everyone - probably the best palatte of colors I've seen on a 911 configurator. Love this Lime Gold. Not courageous enough to buy it, but love it.
Rear end looks like a natural progression and the front end being wider and flatter brings the car up to date while giving a nod to the nostalgic 911 design. Order: PLACED.
People bash Porsche for having lazy designers and engineers - and resting on their laurels.. Then when they make significant advances in technology and design in their new offering, the company gets thrown under the bus. (People bashed porsche for making an SUV years ago "We're a sports car company", people bash the Panamera, bash Porsche for making the Cayman and leeching sales from the 911). I personally thought my 2011 997.2 was dated the day I took delivery. Felt like a 7-year old car with zero miles on the ODO...and it needed about 50 updates from interior materials, to electronics such as auto-headlamps, long Lincoln Towncar bumper overhangs which scraped my driveway, and PCM-updates.
Love the 991 in every way. It's proper natural progression, done handsomely.

Funny that the only thing in the rear that signifies a 911 is the slotted engine lid, IMHO. Take that away and it's Aston Martin, Jag, whatever.
A wild wing like the current OEM GT3 and aerokit offerings would probably still evoke 911, but I wonder if all would be lost with a subtle turbo spoiler or aftermarket deckled spoiler combo.
I don't really like the front either, but I didn't really like the base/S front bumpers since the 993. Aerokit or similar variant is more to my taste. To each his own, I suppose...

No offense intended - just debating the design.
Most non-Porsche folks I've talked to can't tell the difference between this 991 and the 997..then I point out the tails and they kinda see the diff, but not entirely. Then I describe the wider front and shallow roofline and they say "hmm...maybe I see it, but not really." Heck the tail lamps are the same shape as the 997, just stretched and thinner. But still triangles whose points are towards the edges of the car. It's an intentional design attribute to make the back end look wider - horizontal thin lines stretch a geometric plane's width. I like change I guess. Subtle change.
BTW- I don't see the Jaguar in the rear of the new 991.
again - no offense - just discussion. We may ALL have new opinions once we lay eyes on it in person - which my dealer tells me might be within 7-10 days. They've got 3 in port.

Also, note that the spoiler is now wider (like the turbo and gt's) and extends over the taillights. This was not possible with the taller 997 taillights. For the 997, the standard and S version spoiler sat between the taillights. The turbo and gt's spoilers had to be elevated above the taillights in order to be wider since they would have not cleared the taller taillights at that width. Form follows function and also gives a fresh, new look.
...what can I say, there is always a huge debate when an iconic car is completely redesigned. And yes, anyone who is not a Pcar aficionado would be hard pressed to tell a difference between the 991 and the 997.
The 996 was a huge step away from the 993 in a lot of ways. And let's not forget that the first Boxster was released about the same time, sharing a lot of the same interior parts and to make it even worse looked almost identical when looking at the front. Shocking factor to 911 fans was huge and not in a good way.
I'll give it the benefit of the doubt that it usually takes me 2 years to really get used to a new design (and there are some cars I’ll never like, the BMW E65 being the perfect example). However, I have to admit that growing up with the 993 as being THE Porsche, I never liked the 996 - and I still don't, and I liked the 997 from day one because it reminded me of the 993 in so many ways.
The 991 is now finally a grown up car, for better or for worse. The Panamera style interior does remind me of an AM or Jag. It looks bigger, more luxurious, and really modern. My guess is that the 991 will attract a whole new crop of Porsche drivers and make some purists hold on to their 997s at least for a while. It’ll probably be a great DD. If I ordered one, it would be loaded with options, PDK and full leather interior. With that huge center console in the middle, a purist version (imagine plastic and no buttons to fill all that space) would probably look odd. And having driven MT my whole life, I can’ get my head around where the stick shift is placed in the 991 – but I need to experience it first before I say nay. Though my first hunch is that PDK is the transmission of choice for that model. And I just can’t see that car with racing stripes, aero kit and a roll cage as of yet…
Either way, when it’s time to order a 991, I’ll certainly keep my no-options 997.2 C2S anyway
That’s just my $0.02
