East Coast 991 Test

2012 Porsche Carrera S Feb. 7th 42 deg.

Summer tires, PDK, PASM (no PDCC), sports exhaust, standard suspension

Road Test : aggressive driving in Sport Plus mode w/ sport exhaust ‘On’

Porsche Engineers have done a remarkable job, but the effect is the continuing change to a GT car : “Longer, lower, wider, faster, more fuel efficient, and—amazingly—slightly lighter”
Car & Driver magazine 11.2011. See my the phone camera snapshots with horizon lines :

Front shot left 991.1s w/ 20” wheels set exactly aside 997.2gts w/ 19” wheels

Exterior : from the rear the sculpting of the greenhouse to the shoulder is where the mass change seems most apparent. The shoulder is about 2” higher. The front wheel wells have been pushed out relative to the fender line, noticeable in the top view (included w/ the Invite Porsche sent to Owners).

Interior : the windscreen is huge and the shoulder width seems about an 1/2” wider, but the console is an intrusion. The basic controls are similar to the 997.2 but there are so many buttons on the console that it appears busy. Seats were 18-way adjustable, almost too much. I may be incorrect but I felt very enclosed by the ‘bath tub’; this may be due to the shoulder height from the exterior. The sound w/ the sports exhaust ‘On’ is super.

The rear seat head room is actually less; due to the seat platform being slightly higher off the ground while the roof slope may be slightly higher. This may be due to the engine shifting forward. I climbed into both; the 991 is tighter. The front boot is capable of holding 20% more cargo, and has no intrusions.

Drive : I had a blast for 20 mins. The 991 does not seem any larger then a 997. I did a 150’ foot aggressive skidpad and the car was well balanced. I smoke the tires from Launch Control, and the car moved off axis 12” to 15”, with a 8’ foot patch. I’m a c4s owner so I think the two wheel drive is just less planted; though great fun. The new pdk shifting is spectacular; I hope a Programming Upgrade may become available. The steering does have less feel of the tarmac but that just goes with the new target of a GT car; it's still keeping your hands aware. Note that this car didn’t have the ‘paddles’ which I’m OK with. Keep the steering wheel simple please.

The 991 is a great car, an IMO a great step for the 911, but just like every version since 1993, it’s bigger. It will still fit in my garage (when I tire of the 997.2).

It will be interesting to see the gt3, maybe with a rear seat option ?
