Not sure I trust his judgement though.
If the priority is a luxurious cruiser, one could say the SL is 'better driving', but I've never heard anyone rank the SL as a better sports car than the exotics (or 991). I wouldn't even rank the SLS above the 991, though the SLS does have a huge cool factor.

For now, at least, it's THE car to have.
What an awesome post. I have a neighbor like you. Never really satisfied with his car(s), and always swapping.

I've delayed, delayed, delayed getting my Ferrari or Porsche, and have stuck with my M5. My wife has the 2012 Cayenne S (with the natural espresso/cognac leather, and I agree that's fantastic, along with the ventilated seats).

Like you, I think it's all about finding the perfect compliment of cars. The M5 is my daily driver, and with a seconnd set of wheels with snow tires handles the Michigan winter quite well. The Cayenne and the big Merc sport ute do the heavy lifting for the family. However, I'll be getting the small two seat sports car soon for my personal pleasure, and it really only comes down to two marques: Porsche or Ferrari. 991 S4 or used 599 for me. Tough choice, and I flop back and forth depending on my mood.

  • car can be as tame or as perforformance oriented as you want it by the touch of a button
  • much more practical for a weekend trip, etc
  • interior is excellent…very comfortable and luxurious (even with sport seats)
  • stereo (burmester) is amazing….best stock stereo I've ever had….stereo in 430 is junk
  • price

For the money....talking "brand new" car here.....I don't think there's another car on the market that can compare with the new 991.
The Burmester is not the stock stereo. That honor doesn't even go to the crappy Bose stereo. The Burmester is an absurdly expensive option.

I think he meant OEM, not stock.

Your 991 will have a 4-year warranty. The 599 will have the remainder of a 3-year warranty and it will have the sometimes (not always) troublesome F1 (I assume you probably won't find a manual transmission) auto/manual. If you think Porsches are expensive to fix, read up on Ferraris. Of course, if you can afford it, the out-of-warranty Ferrari is a fabulous car.

jmmk: Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us.

Based on your history, I see a 991TT in your future...

All correct observations. I have the SMG-type transmission on the M5, so I'm familiar with that (and is one of the negatives for the 599, as my ability to get a manual for the 911 is one of my positives for that car). The thing about the 599 will be that the majority of the depreciation has already started and will occur over the next year or two for most of the years that it was produced, and then most likely the value will hold firm and may eventually increase. It's purchase price will be relatively favorable.

There are many more practical reasons to purchase a Porsche, and perhaps more emotional reasons to purchase a Ferrari. I've followed these makers for almost 40 years, and know their products and history quite well. However, the money involved (purchase and/or maintenance) really won't be the deciding factor.
