What troubles me is I didn't notice this issue until a few weeks ago. It only occurs when I am driving slow and turn the wheels very sharply. I think there is something that is going on with either the EPS or the Power steering plus, perhaps both. I can replicate the symptoms most of the time I try to. Turn wheels as far as they will go and either back up or go forward...there the sensation occurs. I have had this occur on other cars I've owned in this situation, but never ever like this.

This happens regardless of the temp outside.

Not the power steering plus. I don't have that option but do have the problem. Only when cold and slow sharp turns, mostly backing up. For me there is a shudder and the sound of metal on metal, like some lubricant that is supposed to help pieces move past each other is to viscouse in the colds and cam't spread and lubricate well enough.
My car goes to the dealer, again, next week, for that and annoying door vibrations that they have not been able to fix, and loud rear breakes.
Third time in 9 months

Yes, cold brake pads shifting when reversing. Normal! All cars do it to some extent, more audible on sports cars due to the less insulation and brake design. Limos are pretty quiet though.

First, what a great avatar picture! Second, thanks. It is good to know. Any answers on the door rattles - worse than my $20k Subaru.

After paying $100+ for a car, a few extra hundred for the jump from 19's to 20's, and that's too much? I'm a little confused.

If you want that performance, stuff has to work.

That said - a few vehicles make this sound when in full lock (as mentioned earlier), and pronounced when cold (depending on vehicle and components), but it doesn't sound like bad CV joints. I'm hearing two different descriptions - the first post described a possible suspension or steering related failure, the following posts sound like tires skipping, and the car functioning as normal.

Hard to tell.

I took the car out to get inspected the other day and experienced the dreaded "Clunk."

I was rolling to a slow stop at the bottom of an incline when it suddenly felt as if a tire exploded (I'm not exaggerating). I got right out of the car and eyeballed the situation but everything appeared normal.

I had my friend raise the car during the MV inspection and his mechanic ( a former Audi tech) couldn't see anything out of the ordinary. We went for a ride, but of course the anomaly wouldn't repeat itself. Weird.

Had the same type of symptom happen daily in the winter with both my 07' Cayman and 11' Cayman S. Sounds like a "pop-pop-pop" when turning the wheels for the first time in the morning. By the time I reached next turn of the day, 50 feet from my house, it didn't happen anymore. Was told by the dealer this is normal. However, I have not experienced the same sensation yet in the 991S.

I can understand cold tires "popping" while making a turn, but in my case I was driving straight and the sound was quite louder than a "pop." It literally sounded as if a tire had exploded.

Richard911 is infamous around these parts
We had this on both 2010 Panamera GTS and 997.1 Cab. Seemed to occur when temp was under 50F and tires had less than 30% usable tread left. In both cases tires were P Zeros. Never Has had it with Pilots which we switched to after whereout.

P Zeros skipping probably means that it has stiffer sidewalls (pilots are known for soft sidewalls).

The 997's do it also. I had three, including my current 2012 GTS and they have all made the noise when the tires are cold, and backing up turning the wheel. Nothing to worry about.

I have not noticed this issue on mine, but I drive it nearly every day. 3300 miles.

This has nothing to do with the turning sounds, correct?
If so, I have come across this same sound/feeling at least twice before. It always has to do with the brakes. I could almost say its when the front wheels lock or lose traction. I thought the car had bottomed out one time the way it felt.
The first instance was coming into a gas station. There is a small bump/incline to the place. I was arriving faster than I should, had to make the light, and was braking as I hit the incline. Then the sound and the feel of the brakes was weird, bumpy is the only way I can describe it. Looking underneath, we saw no damage or scrapes. I wasn't surprised as the bump is small. The car stopped fine. I have a hard time recreating the result. I will have to find some sand and see what I can find sometime.

Anybody else come across this yet? Nothing to do with tires and turning.

YOU NAILED IT! Funny thing, I was also heading into a gas station.
