Your dealer refused because BMW is picking up the tab, right? In the US, BMW pays for regular scheduled service; I am assuming they do in Canada also. I don't think they would have refused if you had offered to pay for it.

M Cars are different. After break in, M cars should have their oil and diff fluid changed.

A lot of dealers are still confused about this, but that is what BMW says to do.

M cars also use the 10w-60 oil, which is $$$$.

This is correct. I had three E46 M3's and all of them had a 1,200 mile engine and differential service performed at dealer cost.

yes, oil changes should be done at 10,000 miles or 1

into the grooves of the piston, thereby allowing them to be stable as they
move up and down the cylinders. If you change the oil at 3 or 4 k mi. then
that oil and its surrounding piston rings won`t "seat." In the old days we
used "natural" oil which burned and left ash and varnish which would allow
the rings to stick in place sooner. Now the synthetic oil has no biological
components which burn and leave ash. While this is Very good for longevity
of your motor, due to its heat resistance, it also takes longer for the
piston rings to "seat." You will notice some oil used by the engine during
the first 5k mi. So you may wish to purchase another quart or two to
replace that. You will experience more power and less oil usage after @ 5k
miles. You will also get better fuel mileage. I hope this helps

I asked my personal friend, who is also a Porsche Tech at a local dealership about your question.

He says 5k or 1 year, whichever comes first is fine.

He also mentioned that 2k is okay if it makes you feel better mentally.

He had visited the Porsche factory and learned that the rings are seated when they first test the engine; it really doesn't take that many miles to seat the rings.

I also found it interesting when he mentioned that the factory initially sets the odometer to a minus number so it registers 0 or slightly above after the factory test drive.

Maybe a hybrid of the two ideas. Keep the existing engine oil but change the oil filter, install a magnetic drain plug, and simply top off the small amount that has drained from this process?

I don't think a magnet will work on aluminum

I may be a sucker to the engine oil industry, but just got an oil change done at 2200 miles. Asked the dealer service manager about it, and he seemed to think the only downside is the cost although he certainly didn't push for me to have it done.

Don't know if I am imagining, but the car sure seems to run better since the oil change. I guess placebo effect may be worth it as long as it makes me appreciate my car more...

Mr.Boon is infamous around these parts
Here in Europe the first oil change happens at 30.000 KM. At least that is what the PCM tells me. I'll probably go in around 20k.

Some people, though not admittingly, drive 3-4k miles a year. My guess is 5 k personally. Sometimes its time as much as miles that people do/don't bring their cars in for a service.
So it's ok to wait 2-3 years for the first service ? Maybe not a big deal.

I like to change my oil every 500 miles because I drive like an amazing race car driver, even though I never take my car to the track.

It's too bad that the engineers at Porsche, Volkwagen, Audi or Lamborghini didn't do any research into engine longevity vs oil change interval, otherwise they would recommend my 500 mile oil change regimen as well. I obvously know more than the collective experience of the past and present engineers in the Volkswagen autogroup family.

The purchase of a Porsche 911 vehicle for many, including myself, represented a significant milestone in life and career. It was something may look forward to for decades. For me, along the way there was a house to buy, children to raise, retirement to secure, tuitions to pay, office buildings to build and a practice to build (all not necessarily in that order).

I look forward to reading the words of other 911 enthusiasts here who are interested in improving and enhancing their dream machines. 500, 5000 or 10,000 mile oil change? Hey, that's between you and your engine. Who are we to judge? What do we really know other that what be believe will work best for our vehicles. That is o u r vehicles.

As was told to me 55 years ago while I stood in line for the crayons and drawing paper in kindergarten, play fair, respect others and their property and only say kind words, keep the bad ones to yourself.
