Option pricing and 991S disparity
Option pricing and 991S disparity
So much for all 991S cars being even near equal . I've never seen such price disparity and as I toy with the idea of 991S Vs 991ttS I find myself narrowing the price gap every time I put an option on the 991 . The original car that I built, ordered and cancelled (opting for a needed Cayenne) last year priced around 127K . So now my Turbo S speculative build is 185K . I decided to build a highly optioned (but did omit X51 whick BTW would have placed it in base 991tt pricing). Of course there are a few options I am not sure off . For example I like the aesthetics of the glass roof on a light 991 but wonder if it will in time leak or rattle . My first build had no sunroof at all . I also selected the agate gray interior but only because i felt it looked nice with the roof and blended with a white car . I might change that. Keep in mind .. I also omitted deviated stitching, carbon fiber , and instument cluster or seatbelt color choices.
Here is the build . In my opinion this is a lot of money for a vanilla 991S . I can't even imagine how the price disparity might play out on the used market when a 145K spec car is listed Vs a 110K spec car .
It almost seems even more imperative to get the Turbo S Or very modestly spec the 991S .
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated .

$115 K is a lightly optioned 991S, $145 K is a heavy optioned car.
Here are all your heavy hitters:
8k for ceramic brakes
3k for LED lights
3k for PDCC
5k for Burmester
6k for adaptive seats and prem pack plus
3k for sport exhaust
2k for sport chrono
4k for PDK *
4k for leather *
2k for glass sunroof *
2k for cosmetic options
2k for useful options
* - options with resale value
A Porsche 911 is an emotional purchase so if you check the emotion boxes you pay.
For example, take the Burmester, nice sound, but how much time are you going to listen to it.
The first 4 options on the list are nearly 20k.
Another 10k for the next 2.
If you are looking to cut costs there is 30k you will probably never miss in 97% of driving. As I say it's all emotional.

It's funny that before reading the replies today I built two other configurations . I could even go lower on them . BTW many mentioned the heavy priced options like ceramics .The only reason I placed them on my build idea was to compare it price wise to the Turbo S (ceramics are standard) .
My modest build came out to exactly 115K included a manual , eliminated the roof and did opt for PASM . The middle of the road build came out to 124K .
I think the hard part to digest is how similar looking cars with the same exact engine can price with such a tremendous gap . i have never sen this before with the normally aspirated base and S cars .
The decision for me is really tough . I have to wait for the turbo S to decide .
I dont usually consider buying a used car but I will see how some of tshe price gaps translate onto the used market .
Part of me just feels that at thse prices the car has to be perfect spec and sadly I feel to do it prices the car out of what i consider to be rational .

The last time i had two 911 cars .. it was somewhat silly . I can only drive one at a time and even though the NA car and Turbo compliment each other it's easier to justify the purchase at reasonable pricing .

Thank you . I still love the car and it took 18 months to build. The customizations nearly cost as much as the car itself . it's so over the top that its not a daily driver . Of course i can drive it daily but a 700 Hp, race exhaust , stage 3 clutch , lowered to where the lip can scrape ..it's just not practical .
That's where the M3 comes in but that's where I am uncertain . I look at the new Turbo S and wonder to myself "could it be so incredible that i would want to start all over with a new project ?" Then i look at my M3 which is so new as well yet it's not a 991S .
That adds even more confusion . I actually use the space in the M3 and even though its a nice car it's just not a Porsche 911 . Yet I can park it outside or take it to the supermarket with no worries . An M3 is a nice car but because it looks so much like a cousin of a generic BMW 328 it gets a lot less attention and worry .
That's another issue . the 991 is larger than the 997 and it was already so tight in my garage when I once had two 911 cars . (see pics below ).
I decided to build a few 991S cars . This one so far is my LEAST expensive !!

I would skip the sunroof actually, I never use mine, the wind buffing noise is so annoying, when you have the sunroof open, if you lower one side of the window 1 inch the noise is gone. When you have the sunroof close and window all the way down you get annoying wind booming noise, there are lot of little things I DO not like about the 991. Overall its a great car, I just don't open my sunroof and lower my windows all the way to enjoy it the most

The fact that the difference between a base 991s and one with all of the bells and whistles is about enough to buy a base Boxter is a testament to how expensive the options are. I went more middle of the road. I like the standard sun roof and use it. I like PDCC, but I am not sure it is worth it. I went over the top a bit with the full leather and some decorative panels to "custom" the look. I can honestly say that I would build this same car again - I might have gone with red dials, but that is it.
When you can say the same, you have found your build.
But have you driven the 991S? If you are a torque guy, and looking at the picture of your current turbo, you are, I'm not sure you will like the 991S. It is a great car, and as fast as anyone could want. But it is not quick, especially in normal mode. I know that the high rev thing is the EUROPEAN way. But I am an American driver and a torque junkie. I am not sure I can swing a modestly optioned turbo (around $165K - $190K with taxes, clear bra, radar, wheel insurance and truly out the door), but I know I will want one. I love my 991S. But, I can't say it is my perfect car.

i would:
drop the roof- heavy, rattles, and heat soak
spacers- 5mm is small. go w/ RSS and its 1/2 price of OEM
console lid- not even real leather, besides its cheaper at Suncoast
Burmester- sounds good, but not sure I would do it again, given i have a cab and prefer the PSE!
CCB- Not worth it at all
you cant buy these types of cars if youre worried about depreciation :|
Lastly, I went from a Turbo to the 991s and yes, you will miss the torque and absolute straight line speed. However, the 991s handles, brakes, and sounds better.

For a good build you are going to drop the 125K to 130K no question about it. Things like PDK, sport exhaust, the 18 way seats are a MUST I think on these cars. But comparing it to a 911TT is apples and oranges, for the price you are getting pretty much a daily driver that is very comfortable to drive and it's also a sports car. It may not be crazy fast but a car that is crazy fast isn't a daily driver no matter however you want to justify it, it's a toy you bring out once a while, not one you drive to work everyday and back and sit in traffic in. What Porsche has done is created a unique car that's both and they are charging a premium for it, it's worth it IMO.

I guess i thought that having a 991S and keeping my turbo would offer the best of both worlds .I'd keep the acceleration monster but also have someof the plush comforts of the 991 plus some of the daily driving ability . If i drive my Turbo daily it's just too much to do with a race exhaust , stage 3 clutch (no power assist) , dropped on coil overs , and modded up to the hilt . There is a bit of comfort sacrificed to accomplish 700 Hp and plus many of the upgrades like the Techart aerokit are so expensive that if an old Toyota bumped my car in traffic I'd feel devastated . I drive the car as a treat .
The 991S isn't as costly as the Turbo S and with PDK and left stock is more civilized .
The new Turbo S is somewhat of a middle ground but to buy it I wold have to sell both my M3 and my Turbo to justify spending 185K and I just cant see taking a Turbo S to Publix . Although i once met a guy who drove his Carrera Gt daily and it was his only car .
You are right about the options . Many post about cutting out brakes or full leather and i suppose if the car is a dd that's the way to go but most folks who know me or who have read my posts over the years see that I tend to go all out in looking for the most quality options .
I feel stalemated at least for now . It's not like I am in any way suffering with my 2011 M3 being the daily driver . It only has 15K miles . Maybe all I need is time , more miles on both my cars, and to see the new Turbo S .
Perhaps that is what Porsche did when they priced these cars in this manner .
In the past I would just run out , grab my checkbook and even plead with dealerships who were sold out to find me a car . This the first time I am actually waiting .
