Track day update and shoddy fix to buffeting
Track day update and shoddy fix to buffeting
I love this car but the wind buffeting on track with driver’s window down SUCKS. It is loud and distracting. I was looking for a quick fix. I didn’t want to spend a lot of time to find out that it didn’t work. This looks terrible but worked well. I had significantly reduced noise in the cabin at speed. How come Porsche didn’t fix this? I hope someone on this forum can come up with something better.
I had the car out at Road America on last Friday. I was jumping from car to car and didn’t really have time (not to mention I was starting to get car sick riding shotgun) to set up video. I wish I had. The car was blisteringly fast. The new front brakes were bedded correctly and working well. The front tires are worn and as the day heated up understeer from apex to track out was becoming worse.
It ate up a 650 hp ESS supercharged M3, a turbo Cayman with Hoosier and race brakes and suspension and everything else in its path.
I did notice that I picked up about .75 of a second pretty consistently with left foot braking. It took a couple of laps to bring back the muscle memory. Not only is the transition from gas to brake instantaneous but it was best is where you have a corner where you are just brushing the brake. It seemed to be a lot smoother and I was able to pick up the power sooner.
Driving a dirt sprint car on Thursday. Cannot wait.

Many groups won't let you run with sunroof open. Opening passenger window doesn't help either.
Yes. It is not really a great fix. I was running late and did it just before I jumped in the car. I will try something better this year.

Maybe get a Volt?

Thanks a lot for the 'track report'. Not surprised you ate up fast/high hp cars with your driving experience + 991
Have never tried left foot braking before (always driven manuals before the 991). Maybe I'll practice on the old E46 M3 first...

Okay so I'm out driving right now and the Cabriolet with all windows down and top up, has absolutely zero buffet. The only buffet in the Cabriolet is with all windows up and only the driver side all the way down. (via 6SpeedOnline iOS)

it is still an issue...and not just for track driving. i was out earlier in the week when we had some nice weather. i had both the driver's window open and the sunroof. mad buffeting at 60mph and above.
someone needs to design a fix. either an economical mirror cover OR perhaps a triangular extension to the small triangle piece at the corner of the driver's window that deflects air outward. i noticed that if i put my hand in the space between the mirror and the door at that location the buffeting disappeared.

Good research solution Marc!! With all the emphasis on track, I can't imagine why Porsche has not fixed this problem. We just talked about how much time they spent in a wind tunnel- they should dedicate a little time to this issue also! And if the GT3 mirror is the fix, use it for Carrera.

Those of you dealing with the annoyance of wind buffeting issues on the track, you will soon be able to put your buffeting worries at bay. We've been hard at work on developing a solution for this issue known to plague 991-generation Porsche 911s.
Coming soon, the AWE Tuning Foiler™ Wind Diffuser. The simple, elegant solution to wind buffeting in Porsche 991s.
Unobtrusive design, simple install and impressive results.

I have been annoyed by that same problem. I took a piece of stiff cardboard, cut it into a rectangle and slid it between the door and the little quarter window on the passenger side. The cardboard extended from the window to the mirror, similar to your tape, but was not attached to the mirror. It was enough to stop the buffeting, even with nothing on the driver's side.
High tech? Certainly not. But free and removable. There are folks who are coming out with more permanent solutions as well. Here is one that looks great, but is not inexpensive:
