DEM and Sports chrono selection
Walter Röhrl has said a base C2 with no options is a very capable car.
He has also said that DEM's come into play if one takes sharp transition corners at 90 mph.
The PDK transmission in a non Sport Chrono car is setup for fuel economy.
The PDK transmission in a Sport Chrono car in Sport Plus mode is setup for maximum performance.
If you get PDK, it's highly recommended to get Sport Chrono as it opens up the performance setup which can be mixed and matched with the economy mode options.
In the 7MT car, it is a nice to have but not required.

scatkins, I went thru the same dilemma when ordering. In the end with sport mode and manual shifting of PDK, that covered 99% of the situations for my driving, I don't track. In sport mode in a 4S, the cars limits are well beyond mine. I also like the clean dash. It was never a cost thing, its what made sense for my needs.

The fact is: every 991 goes like stink and handles superbly. You cannot go wrong with a base, an up-optioned up base or an S. All the goodies are icing on the icing.
To answer your question: Up until now in my test drive's I haven't focused on what I was testing as related to sport chrono. It has pretty much just been normal vs Sport.. Thus my questions in trying to get a better understanding of even knowing what to look at..
So for me a little intellectual exercise in my mind is warranted just to understand just to test drive the car... and to that point, based on the helpful explanations I've gotten I have a much better idea as to how to do that..
The SC is a fairly complicated and multidimensional feature that isn't very concisely explained by Porsche (at least in what I've seen) in how it interacts with the different operating modes and PDK operation.
Just the fact that it is call "sports Chrono" seems to me the intention is to market the option more as a shiny stopwatch on the dashboard instead what is really more of an engine/transmission management function.. Seems like it should have another Porsche acronym related to Engine/Transmission management...
Luckily, there are a number of articulate folks on the board such as yourself who can describe how you use it and now I'm finally starting to understand how it a lot better. Now with a better understanding I can go drive it again and make a more informed decision to see if it makes sense for me.. Up until now my test drives has been just turning on sport mode and operating in normal auto PDK mode and the watching it redline before shifting, which I'm not really interested in doing very often..
And I think for me (a non tracker, but who desires an spirited car) if there is any value it is with PDK in manual shift mode in Sport+.. Because as you and a few other folks have indicated, that seems to get the combination of PDK that is closest to a Manual transmission level of control. For me that is valuable since I started out presuming I wanted an M7, but gradually changed my mind as PDK won me over. That said, being a manual guy, I desire something at times that will be closer to the manual experience (not always just sometimes when I'm in the mood).
And unfortunately, in reading through most the threads here and on rennlist there is a lot of.. "just get it you need it" comments which fine if money is no expense and all, but not very helpful.. I'm also suspicious in general as it seems there are a lot of people who track cars in these forums (or at least claim they do) than I come across in real life.. And it seems those folks have a radically different perspective at times..

Have you driven a car with sport + and compared it to normal and sport modes in both manual and auto pdk on roads that are windy/straight and allow for severe acceleration and deceleration (safety first!)? If not, this is an intellectual exercise that, because you say you don't care about resale value, probably won't get you many answers that help.
That aside, given your description of how you want to use the car none of the sport + functions (launch mode, severe relaxation of stability management, track-based shifting, etc.) are likely of value to you in 99.9% of your driving as a practical matter. Is it nice to know in the back of your mind that you have these capabilities and some day under some circumstance you can use them since you bought them? Maybe. You may know your mind better than any of us.
Lastly, using sport+ in manual mode is as close as you can get to old style shifting and being either a full-out race/track/street driver or hormonally challenged but now much more responsible (perhaps) than you were then kid as you can get short of going full manual. It can be a blast. I like it much better than having to punch a clutch, others don't. Personal preference. All of the above are worth it to a lot of folks. You have all the data (unless you haven't demo'd the car) time to order up.
(With regard to the DEMs, you will never know what they are doing for you unless you demo a car with them vs a car without under the right conditions. I came from a 997.2S and given the changes in the wheel base and the DEMs car to car I can tell a difference in cornering and it is significant. Again, given your stated driving conditions they sound like they will be of no value to you.)

Yeah, I tend to agree.... unless I'm trying to one up my friends (lol none of them even have late model porsches anyway) I'm likely to never really care what I don't have anyway.. At the end of the day a base 911 ain't bad in any form I'm sure (although I do find the PDK, in normal/non Sport mode a bit tame.. I think sport needs to be on normally by default

Sport+ with its faster response, and dynamic engine mounts with tighter control over engine mass shifts at very high side G loadings are both beyond anything "needed" on a 991 in terms of general responsiveness and safety in all but the most extreme circumstances.

Driving Pdk in M, I see little difference between S and S+
But I'm still breaking in, never over 5k or wot, so that experience might change when I can let her loose.

You should add smokers package as it provides you with a lid and cigarette lighter receptacle that you can use to trickle your car when in you are not using car for a while. Best part is it costs nothing.
Yeah, that's one I've been thinking about. Covers the hole in the center. I guess that gives one more place to connect a charger as well..
