Hi all
Life's hard and there's big decisions to be made. It's time to get into the p car game but can't decide which one.
The fleet now is a ml63 as dd and sl63 for weekend.
This is my plans/ideas
1. 991 gt3 - keep ml, perhaps swap for a 09 c63 saloon
2. 997.2 turbo for weekends and a stripped out e36/46? M3 Track car
3. 997.2 gt3 and a new c63 coupe for dd
4. 991 carrera S - m3 track prep car
Which one would you do? Or anything else you can think off within the budget of £50k or so

Next, ask yourself what you want to drive on the track. If going fast is what matters the most, 991 GT3 > 991 C2S > 997 GT3 > M3's and you would feel frustrated when you get in a e36/46 M3, even if it is prepped (meaning track day prepped, not race prepped obviously).
I am personally not a fan of Merc's, so I'd rather go for an RS7 for the week (Quattro makes it perfect and quick whatever the season and weather) and a 911 for the week end and the track. In that case, the 991 GT3 would be my preferred option. A Bare bone C2S with the sport suspension, X51 and PCCB (or aftermarket BBK) is nice and quick around the track, but you can also enjoy it for week end drives (probably a bit more than the 991 GT3 - I do not know-).
The 997 GT3 is an older generation and can be fun if you make it a hardcore dedicated track car. I tried to use it for more than the track and walked away from it.
My car budget isn't that big, so my 991 C2S is my daily driver AND track car (permanent rollbar, swapping pads of my Brembo BBK, swapping wheels for 19"+R-compound tires and replacing my 18 way seats by GT2 bucket seats for track weekends). It may not be as convenient as having 2 cars the but 991 can be so comfortable during the week and so quick on the track that I would not want anything else.
I recently bought an e36 that my son and myself are modifying and it is fun on the track -much slower though- but you never have the impression of delivering a surgical strike like you do with the 991

Just a personal feedback of course. Always fun to fantasize about spending somebody else's $$... or ££

PS: I did not comment on the gearbox... the scope of your choices and possibilities is too broad to start arguing about the tranny first...

Eliminate 2 from the get go, I have heard several people who were happy to trade their 997.2 turbo for a 991 C2S (no kick from the turbo anymore but better balanced all around 911, still very quick).

I agree with what you say and have ruled out #2, the way I see it now its 997.2 vs 991 gt3
I decided this morning to put down my (refundable) deposit for the gt3, expected delivery 2014 April
In the mean time ill keep an eye out for 7's and hope when the first 991's do come out, prices drop and perhaps pick up a good example 997.2
Will be interesting also to drive a 997 and a 991 side by side and make my mind up then
Im sure the 991 will be a superior car in almost every way, but the way I see it:
For track driving and long drives to and from the track, 991 wins hand down.
So, the real test is, for a weekend drive, will the 991 be special enough and involving enough (not at the limit-road driving) without its manual gearbox and electric steering???
Trending Topics
Owned a 997 C4S - now own a 991 S, MAJOR diff. 991 is like split personality with sport+, PASM and Sport exhaust. Can be a daily driver and when buttons are pressed, great performing car that I've taken on track. Much better handling, stability overall. hands down 991 is superior. I have the 7 speed manual and with Sport+, rev level matching is done by the software when downshifting. PDK is superior performance, but rather boring for me. Electronic steering - no difference noted. 20" wheels - much smoother ride and better handling. Cabin ergonomics with multi-function display in instrument cluster coupled to multi-function touch screen, nav, sirius, etc. superior to 997. Go for 991, keep sedan or SUV for other use.
