I'm not surprised. Many of the current NYU graduates had no idea who Janet Yellen is.

It seems the "dumbing down" of America is far more than a myth.

On the flip side of all this, if a parent or grandparent spends a little extra time nurturing a child, they can really help that child take advantage of this sad situation. The sheep will always need shepherds.

Taking a step back, I am amazed how emotional most forum members are in their responses. It was not the smartest question (or rather the most clearly stated), but it probably was not trolling and does not deserve all this bashing.

Go away. Stop trolling. This thread sucks!!!
I didn't mean to flaunt anything.

I read these a few years ago.

"Much as an RX400 owner might also feel the purchase of the car is a reward for his or her own success, that’s more or less the sole motivation among those who buy a Porsche 911. The most decidedly male (87%) buyers are successful (median income $390,000), know what they want, work hard to get it and enjoy rewarding themselves when they reach a milestone"

Agree, we should (including myself) should lighten up.. But then again, some people are so entirely self unaware of how they present themselves in their communication you just want to shake your head in wonder.. Yes I agree, self restraint and just ignore the posts..

I am amazed at how the OP was raked over the coals for this question.
Perhaps he could have worded the question differently and with more tact, but the crux of the question is valid.

What I find far more vulgar and offensive on this forum is the need for certain members to perpetually wear their money on the outside (present company excluded).

This is manifested by them using ANY opportunity to reference and showcase their other collection of cars (and wealth), no matter how unrelated to the topic at hand.

A little discretion goes a long way...

Yes. I realize my question was a bit... out there.
I made it a bit outlandish to catch people's attention ie: "am I "rich" enough".
And I realize the initial post wasn't phrased with the most clarity.

I apologize for that.

huh????? Why didn't he just sell the NYC penthouse and get money from that? Seems a bit dramatic. Jeeeze are people that dumb? No one saves? Even if I was making millions a year I'd put some in the bank for a rainy day.

OTOH I think you've done a good job of sounding unobnoxious. Why not ask? Other 991 owners might offer you a perspective on your question that you hadn't considered. You've gotten some good general financial advice and support for your pre-owned approach. Interest rates don't really apply to the decision right now so you're really asking about whether you can afford $10-15k per year in depreciation. Is it worth that to you?

Benefit of the doubt to the OP..... When will you feel 'rich enough' if you dont now? I certainly dont but I'd rather love and lose than never love at all... (Darn ... Did i really just quote an 80's glam rock band!?!)
You can afford the car today... So buy it today... Love the heck out of making the right decision.... And start a new thread about how much you are enjoying it!

Didn't you start an exact thread about, "Can I afford a 997' and post all your financials on the 997 subforum? If not, someone else did, this thread is deja vu all over again. The avg household income for two people is $50K a year. If you have $250K cash in the bank, you are doing it all wrong unless you are about to drop a significant amount on a business opportunity or buying a million dollar home. $250K cash in the bank will do nothing for you.

Yeah. That is kind of what I have been thinking. Since I only drive the car during summer months here in MN, I am now thinking now I shuoldn't buy a 991.

Thanks for your help.

I appreciate your apology and yes, you could have couched your question more diplomatically. You definitely got the attention of lots of forum members though.

Only you can judge whether buying a Porsche is "financially idiotic." The reality is that we can obtain safe, reliable automobiles for much less than the cost of any new or recent model year Porsche. Indeed, these days many around your age do not want their own car. At some point in the distant future today's models may appreciate in price, but the math of buying a Porsche for most of us has nothing to do with finance.
