991 vs. 997 - Does the Power Occur Higher in Rev Range?
991 vs. 997 - Does the Power Occur Higher in Rev Range?
Hey
I have driven a 991 and honestly didn't fall TOTALLY in love because I am so used to my 997. (But I assumed I'd grow to love it if I learned how to drive it)
I have carrera base, yet when I drop it into 2nd gear at about 4000 RPMS it seems to really pull.
But when I do this on a 991 S, it doesn't have as strong of a pulling sensation.
Is it true that I have to get the 991 into higher RPMs?
If so, why is this? I'd think if the engine was stronger, that it would be possible to do this in lower RPMs.
Forgive me for my lack of knowledge over this stuff, I am not a mechanical genius.

I cannot begin to explain the reasons for why the car pulls harder in the higher rev ranges (I will let someone else do that) but I too found it to be the case when I took out the 991 S and 4s for test drives. I like high revving n/a engines though and the sound they make at the top of the rev meter is truly enjoyeable. I just bought a 997.2 and it pulls plenty hard enough for me but the 991 definitely felt/is faster, I just preferred other aspects of the 997 (plus with my budget it was the right choice for me).

But by default I'd think a 991 would pull harder at the same Rpms. Esp w an S. 75 more hp
What you are experiencing is the raw sensation of the 997 compared to the more sophisticated and refined feeling of the 991. They are very different vehicles.
The noise and vibration of the 997 is much more pronounced. The 991 engineered out a great deal of the noise and vibration. The 991 is faster. It just may not feel faster.
I have owned a 997.1, 997.2 and now a 991. All three were base coupe models, all three manual. I am pretty experienced with the differences.
Not to say one is better or worse, just very different sensations. The 991 can be used comfortably as a daily driver, not so much with the 997... It's just "raw'er".
Only you can decide which one is better suited for your driving style and lifestyle.
Good luck!

From my experience, the base 991 really wakes up above 5000rpm, the 4S I have now seems to deliver the power in a more progressive way. It feels stronger down low and in the midrange revs, but the base has more drama at the top end.
The 991 is faster than the 997, but Also more refined and isolated, it may feel slower, but it isnt.
IMO my 991 is more fun to drive than the 997 Turbo S I had back in 2011.

Ahhh. What the other's above had said. The 991 is more refined. As with a lot of the modern luxury cars much of the excitement and raw feeling has been tamed to make the ride more compliant. The power and speed has not been compromised (the numbers prove that) but a lot of what has been done to the 991 has made it more in to a "GT" car. So, although it is a good bit faster the ferocity of that speed is more subtle.
Just some data (from wiki) to illustrate some points:
997.2 base: 345 PS (254 kW; 340 bhp)@6500, 390 N·m (288 lbf·ft)@4400
997.2 S: 385 PS (283 kW; 380 bhp)@6500, 420 N·m (310 lbf·ft)@4400
991 base: 350 PS (257 kW; 345 bhp)@7400, 390 N·m (288 lb·ft)@5600
991 S: 400 PS (294 kW; 395 bhp)@7400, 440 N·m (325 lb·ft)@5600
Thus the 997.2 certainly hit peak torque and power earlier in the rev range. It would be useful to look at the actual torque curve to compare power/torque at any rpm.
