991.2 Intro

Do we know when the 991.2 will be available to order?

tommyboy214 08-15-2014 10:29 AM

There are some threads on this in the forum with spy footage etc for the 991.2. I have yet to see anything on order date but the speculation is it is a MY16. If this is true it would not be out until next summer.

Sounds about right!

scatkins 08-15-2014 11:34 AM

yeah all the stories on this I saw indicated it would be MY2016.. or late in '15.. for the base and S.. with others models to follow.. The indication was 16 would be half way through the 991 product life. So that would imply it being sold through about 2019...

Funny thing was one of the stories about hybrid 911's from Porsche a couple of months ago indicated that a hybrid might come about 2019 or so.. So that would align with a hybrid in the next generation 911 that succeeds 991.

From the reports it really didn't seem to be all that much new. But then again that was just the exterior. I'm definitely in the camp that doesn't think they will do any major engine changes or offer a 4cyl Turbo.. just would be to messy in terms of product placement with the Turbo and Turbo's.. That engine is going to find it's way into boxsters or Caymens first I'm sure.

rear lights looked a little bigger, but i like the 991.1's better imo

Targa2015 08-19-2014 06:17 AM

My sources tell me that they are going to take a 911 body and put it on top of a Cayman GTS frame and it's going to be all engine from midway to tail pipe. You sit actually under the engine and use a periscope to see the road. This was designed by Porsche just to appease the 3,000 6 speed threads on whether someone should buy one or the other. Now it's settled. Buy the new 911 Cayman !!

Very insightful!;) But how about the change to 4 cylinders and twin turbos.

So we can order the 2016 99.2 end of next year? thanks

tommyboy214 08-19-2014 05:07 PM

M5 if the MY2016 comes out next summer my guess would be you'll be able to order next spring. The big auto shows are coming up in The fall, possibly Porsche will show off a 991.2. It's all speculation at this point.

Those are actually the infrared sensors which turn off peoples cable boxes as you drive down the street. Really pisses them off. :)

Isn't there usually a change first in the engine in the 9XX.2 cars that will carry over to the new body (2019)?

The 997.2 in 2009 went with the DFI engine (adding HP and TQ) and the PDK so both engine and transmission were changed.

Can we expect maybe a variation of the 991 GT3 PDK in the new 991.2 cars? Maybe more HP as well. I guess they need to also make room for the GTS which should have the power kit with even more HP. Rear steering added in 2019 cars also with the hybrid models.....

tommyboy214 08-27-2014 04:22 PM

Looks like a few more spy shots.

Looks like they've added the intelligent fins for the front air intakes.
BMW stated this mainstream trend a few years ago to improve with aerodynamics at higher speeds.

Porsche had this active grill front intake feature on their 928 model 27 years ago ( opened at stop and go speeds for better cooling and closed at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics)

dux 08-27-2014 05:35 PM

Hence my use of the word "mainstream".

Hooray for Porsche!!

Perhaps they'll rattle too.

wanderfalke 08-27-2014 05:53 PM

Historically have the .2 models had slight power increases, and a body refresh with a incremental price hike?

.

In the go-go 80s before the stock market crash of '87 , Porsche was as " mainstream " a euro brand as BMW . Porsche lots were jammed with cars and sales were sky high. My first one was the ultimate yuppie stereotype Porsche of the time ....the '86 944 Turbo . The saying back then was that the dated 911s were purchased by old farts and bloated 928s were bought for dentists wives, remember ? At least they were three very different vehicles inside and out...very costly from a manufacturing and development standpoint.

After the crash, sales plummeted , leading to their dark days through the mid 90s when the significantly parts -shared Boxster saved them from being taken over vs bankruptcy , but the unfortunate result is that today's 911, Boxster and Cayman still share many parts and their interiors look pretty much the same save for trim differences.

Looks like Panamera style changes with some slight squared off looks.

It's seems like grills, lights, styling, etc.. All make their way across all models.

I think with the current 991 they hit it out of the ballpark!

STG991 08-29-2014 06:17 AM

A lot of the areas in question are disguised and taped off. You can see the body colored vinyl.

Not sure about some of the changes?? What going on with the engine grill?? I hope they're not vertical vents! Horizontal ones flow better with the rear lines of the car.

Would not be a fan of bigger tail lights. They might even be Macan like? Would not be surprised.

looks like more of the same info

speedsterr 09-04-2014 02:26 PM

I think the rear looks much worse than the current 991. I actually prefer the rear of the 997.2 even over this. The rear of the current 991 is good as is. Doesn't need to be changed to this. All they should do is maybe change the front and add the macan multifunction wheel and that is it. And definitely add more HP.

TRM 09-04-2014 07:23 PM

funny...given that the pics seem to be more of the Frankenstein-duct-tape covering up the true cosmetic mods...do you ever wonder if this is not just some marketing agenda to spin up interest in the model?

i do a bit of marketing as a consultant and i can see how this actually is analogous to a content marketing strategy, i.e., keep pushing out content, stay present with the enthusiast demographic and automobile press, blah, blah, blah.

tommyboy214 09-08-2014 04:15 PM

Looks like the Turbo is getting the refresh as well.

More of the same. Rear engine cover, door handles, front LED lights. No official word on power or possibly PCM.

Hate to say it but those pics feature turbo vents and base Carrera exhaust tips. Turbocharging is coming. Also keep in mind the 997.2 S featured a 30 HP bump over 997.1S.

Just curious -- where are the vents you speak of? Are they the horizontal slits on either side of the rear bumper? Are those specifically designed for turbo ventilation?

Yeah I'd be careful drawing any conclusions based on pics.. For example I was watching the documentary about testing of the 991 initially back in 2010 and the test 991s which were NA had fake vents on them.. They tape and disguise these things ( the documentary which porsche made even admitted they did it just confuse the press..)

Just remember that the pics of the 991s during their initial testing had fake vents on them as well... So who knows...

But I don't disagree turbos are coming though..

wanderfalke 11-19-2014 07:14 AM

It does not seem unreasonable to expect a 30hp bump with turbos combined with a lot more torque, smaller displacement, and better mpg. Would not expect 500 anything on the base or s models.

Exactly why I asked. If you look at the pictures, you can see that one of the "vents" is close to peeling off. :D

Lol yes .. It seems porsche likes to disguise with vents.. Maybe they rely on the assumption that the turbos usually come along a year or so later than the base and s.... So no one is looking yet.. Or maybe they assume it might be mistaken for a cayman

wanderfalke 11-19-2014 10:43 PM

The more I look at those photos the less I see relating to what the face lifted model might actually look like. It is not even a teaser but rather a complete misdirection.

Christophosphorus 11-20-2014 12:51 AM

I've usually been impressed by the .2 revision to 911 taillights, subtle body changes, etc. I hope Porsche doesn't take a revolutionary pen-to-paper approach with the 991.2. Even though the body could improved with some slight changes, I feel like the chances of a screw-up are higher this time.

911cv 11-20-2014 08:23 AM

What will the badging on the .2 991 models read: Turbo?

Maybe Porsche is intending on supercharging the existing turbo in order to ensure the .2 models stay differentiated.

GreggT 11-20-2014 10:45 AM

Sorry, I may have missed this but......is the general feeling that this refresh would hold for two yrs?....i.e. the sunset of the 991 (and perhaps manual 911s :() would be 2017MY?

If you are saying the last 991 would be 2017MY...? Assuming the cut in is mid model.. So far it was 2012 1/2, 13, 14, 15. Which is just short of 4 years.. So if that is mid cycle.. It would say 2019 would be the last MY of the 991 (8 years total).

In reality I still don't quite understand the cut in of the Turbo's mid model cycle. (or cutting in any brand new engine technology) as it makes much more sense to do that kind of thing on a new model type.

I'm also still suspicious it is all a ruse and nothing but a trial balloon to gauge market reaction. Given that it screws up their entire product line and the differentiation of turbos..

But who knows, maybe it is something they are being driven to by the environmental and fuel economy laws.. Still not convinced it will really happen until I see it.

GreggT 11-20-2014 12:28 PM

2019, golly.
Eight yrs would be the longest I would recall for a series.....not saying it's not possible.
993 was 6 I believe......996 was 5 1/2......997 was 6 1/2 or 7 depending how you count but more important may be that the 997.2 face lift was good for 3 yrs (09-11) however it was far more than just a face lift and deserved a new number.

I gave up trying to track Turbo intros relative to 911 other than they are 'after'. :)

+1, been saying this since the rumors were published. It'll be a random move for Porsche to do this mid-cycle.

I guess we'll be proven right or wrong soon. :p

Yeah the only wild card in there is the ninny laws (environmental/Fuel economy) that might be forcing their hand on this.

But by the same token, it isn't like the laws are anything new. I'm sure they have baked them into their long term development/product plans. It's really the reason behind all the coasting/autostart non-sense that they introduced with the 991.

The other thing is Porsche has already said they expect to introduce hybrids into the 911 family in the 2019 timeframe.. It would seem that introducing yet another new engine.. i.e the small turbo (given the current 3.4 and 3.8L Boxer engines are pretty new). Then in another 3 years or so start producing hybrids (which in itself is a radically different technology... wondering where the batteries will go? The backseat?).

It just seems like a massive amount of development and cost... not to mention developing a new engine (the current 3.4/3.8) and dumping it after 4 model years.

But who knows.... should be interesting to see what happens..
