I'm not sure it's impossible but it will be expensive. When I ordered my car I was considering the LED's but was unable to get the rear view mirror in leather at the time which of course tells us that part is unique to the LED install also. There may be other prerequisites I would imagine and of course some coding involved. Should be interesting though to see what may be required.

Absolutely possible -- but as Rapture stated, you may have some prerequisites, not sure. I was looking at the parts, and they are a plug-and-play modification as far as I can tell. Simple ask of Suncoast Parts or your local dealer and you should know... Considering the "black" headlamps are in the $2500-$3000 range I imagine the LED version will be higher. Maybe you can find a used pair off of a TT or GT3?

They are NOT plug and play going from bi-xenon to LED.

Even the rear view mirror on the LED's is different as it has a sensor for oncoming vehicles that alters the headlight output or angle.

I stand corrected....

My interpretation of "plug-and-play" is that there isn't any difference in the headlamp assy mounting / installation in a 991 whether you opt for LED, Bi-Xenon, or standard option. Is there a different wiring harness if you chose LED option? I doubt it, but am interested in learning if there is.

I get that there are other prerequisites and stuff like that -- wasn't my point. If someone handed you a LED assy I bet you can take one of your existing lights out, plug in the new one and get some light out of it!

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that the other difference with the LED option are the DRLs. DRLs are now the halo LEDs rather than the lower lights. I'll assume that is part of the programming change required if you opt for the LEDs.

Unfortunately the plug isn't even the same one to be able to plug one in for the other.

The only thing you'll have is a headlight assembly that will fit in the same spot but doesn't function.

This conversion is possible in some way. After all, they're the same car. Estimating a cost of 10K parts and labor. Not sure anyone wants to go down that road for just LED headlights. A huge waste of $$$ to switch over.

For my own edification, with the PDLS, the lights swivel left to right for cornering. Doesn't mention up and down, is this a feature of the PDLS Plus? Wondering if in addition to the mirror, there's also a sensor on the upper control arm for self-leveling; which may be another piece of the upgrade?

It includes an oncoming headlight detector that turns off high beams. I believe Cadillac had this 50 years ago.

Yeah, got that. The question was directed towards the self-leveling component of the headlamp system; which I don't believe is part of the beam-detector technology. For example, BMW's have a self-leveling sensor on the upper control arm. So, what part of the Porsche system performs that feature and would this be a part of the LED feature?

This camera is located in the rear view mirror.

PDLS+ is not on the GT3 even if you choose the LED lights. It is on all other models.

-------------------------

LED main headlights including Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS+) Superior safety, sporty design:

LED main headlights with PDLS+ are available as optional equipment. Integrated into each headlight housing are four LED spots for the daytime running lights and one LED light ring. In addition to being efficient and durable, LED technology also creates a light very similar to daylight and thus helps to reduce driver fatigue. One special feature of PDLS+ is the dynamic main beam function. A camera detects the lights of vehicles ahead as well as those of oncoming traffic.

Based on the data from the camera, the dynamic main beam function then adapts the headlight range accordingly. This continuous, stepless control means that you are able to see the course of the road, pedestrians and potential hazards earlier without hindering other road users.

Infomative as always. So the answer is no, there isn't another sensor controlling the headlamps.

I dug a little deeper, there seems to be 2 modules, external to the headlamp, not sure if both are required for the PDLS+ functionality. One may be a ballast of sorts for the 4 LED's surrounding the headlamp.

The two modules are required if you want to upgrade from the standard bi-xenon (which level vertically) to the PDLS which do the vertical and horizontal and have active lighting that adapts to steering angle / speed etc. I upgraded my standard lights from the stock with silver housing to the black housing PDLS version. Needed to change these modules and recode via PWIS to get the upgraded lights to function properly.
