4S vs 4 -- worth it?
As you probably already know, the C4 cab is a bit heavier given the added weight of the 4WD system and the roof mechanism. Hence the Base Cab and Base Targa are the slowest in the current line up due to their power:weight ratio.
For those obsessed with 1/10th or 3/10th of a second, they will tell you it's worth every penny - and in fairness it is a purely subjective point of view.
The realty of the situation is that almost none of us will ever come close to utilizing the true potential of these cars.
That's the genius of marketing..

From a practical point of view, you don't need the "S", nor the 911, nor any model Porsche really. Then again, if you've ever been late to an important appointment by about half a second, you'll want to get the 911 Carrera 4S.
Only you can answer this. You have to drive both an S and a base car and see if the difference matters to you. And it's more than just about 0-60 times--the S car will probably have a more robust midrange which may make a big difference to you (the 3.8 NA engine certainly does have a stronger midrange than the 3.4 NA motor).
That said, I have a C4 MT. It's the slowest car I own, at least when considering 0-60 times. But it's also my favorite car by far and I don't regret not getting the S at all.
