best tires? i have Pirelli P Zero
I would not doubt that for a second. Why else would my Spyder have P Zeros? Not even PZ4s.
I know that many feel the MPSS are one off the best options for the 991. I use to believe it but since I don't track my car, the Pirelli P-Zeros have been absolutely fine. Reasonably priced and less likely to dry rot like the Michelins.
I'm in the minority when it comes to the MPSS. Twice I replaced MPS2 with MPSS on 997 S's and didn't like them. The MPSS cost less and had the promise of lasting longer. I found them less grippy and slippery as they aged. I felt I paid less and got less. Now the new MS4S seems like it may be a winner. Per Tirerack's website they show it being made in the US too and they already have it priced and it's reasonable. At this point with the MS4S about the hit the market, there's no reason to consider a MPSS. When my '08 RS60 Boxster's MPS2 gave up, I replaced with Bridgestone RE-11s. Those and the Michelin Cup 2's are the best tires I've ever had. I've also had the Goodyear F1's on a Cayman R and Pzeros on a '14 Cayman S and '16 Spyder. I like them but don't expect them to last too long. I have nothing negative to say about them, like I could the MPS2 and MPSS.
I had the dilemma when recently picking my replacement P-Zero's at tire rack. Stay with N0 or non-N.. In reality I don't really buy into the differences the endless arguments for N0's vs non.. Yes there could be minor differences in material as the N0's are specifically formulated for the 991.. blah, blah blah...
I suppose it would mean more if I tracked, or drove at 180MPH... but I don't.. So it is all pretty irrelevant.
In the end I just went with the N0's... as I was tired of thinking about it.. But I consider it a waste of $ over the non N0's.. In the end I'm fairly certain regardless of all the "experts" here that the cost difference is about Porsche Licensing fees and marketing.
My dealer used to buy from Tirerack and just charge like $50 to mount and balance. I was only able to take advantage of that once (my first set of PSS in 2011). They quit doing that by the time I needed to buy another set. Essentially they now buy tires like a factory part and the price is what the price is. Which is way more than Tirerack. Plus you don't get any insurance from buying from the dealer. Not every independent tire place can handle the tire sizes Porsche uses, so it takes some research. When I had my Bridgestone RE-11s mounted on my RS60 Spyder, the Firestone/Bridgestone dealer broke the bit that pushes the tire on the rim twice. What a mess.
Just bought some MPSS 4s for my 15 TTS. Supposed to be available in the TS size and delivered in Mar. Talked to Michelin rep and a tirerack rep. Yes these are not N0/1 rated though. Now if only stops snowing here in NE I should be good to go in April.
My dealer charges $200 for mounting balancing and re lubing the center lock on the wheels. So $1500 bucks for the tires, $200 to mount/balance $1700 overall not bad.
Couple of years back, I had Pirelli P0s on my Cayman S and switched to MPSS. About the same traction but I liked the tire being a much quieter tire.
