991.2 Understeer with Rear wheel steer
991.2 Understeer with Rear wheel steer
Hey all, I am going to blame myself first in this and say I need more DE. However I have a 2017 Carrera S with sport package and rear wheel steering that I really am surprised at how much understeer I am getting. I confirmed all tire pressures are good and when I used the sport suspension mode this morning I almost didn’t turn heading into the corner. It’s just weird. I know you have to drive these differently and I tried to wait a bit and then used the throttle to steer out a bit but nothing seems to change the behavior. It is strange because it seems like I was able to take the same curve in my Macan S with better control which really shouldn’t be true with its higher center of gravity. I realize it is AWD of course. The only thing I can figure is that I am driving faster than I realize perhaps or that the temps are too cold for that type of maneuver (it was around 50 this morning but I had warmed the tires). I bought the car new so I know there is nothing wrong there, I was just curious if others have the same experience despite the rear wheel steering assist.
Tire pressure and temp could play into this somewhat but my money is on you driving faster into the corner than you realized. I say this as I agree that it’s hard to believe the Macan would corner better than a 911.
I've driven my 2018 GTS cab (2wd with RAS and PDCC) really hard and fast, and I haven't experienced any understeer at all yet. If you're consistently experiencing it, especially if it's worse than your Macan S, I'd say something must be wrong.
Yep, you can also ask for more of a balance between a street alignment and a track alignment. The tires will wear faster but you can find the balance you want. I pretty much always align mine for the track...
I'll agree with R_Rated that you should check your alignment... it sounds like a toe problem to me. I just autocrossed my 991.2S with RAS yesterday and understeer was not a problem.
As a related aside: I did have much more trouble with oversteer than I anticipated. It was my first time driving this RWD car at the limits after my prior 991.1 C4S. I guess I can now confirm that RWD and AWD cars need to be driven differently at the limits. My brain had a hard time adjusting to this. And somehow I expected RAS to magically help whip me through corners more than was reasonable. Even RAS didn't help when I kept bullheadedly over-applying throttle and breaking the rear tires loose with all of the torque available in the 991.2 (especially without the front tires helping share the power application load to pull me through like I was used to).
