Buying used 991 should I wait for 2020 model to come out?
Hi,
I'm currently shopping for used 991 or 997.2. Do you think with the changes coming out with 2020 911 its worth waiting? That is, do you think prices for two prior used versions may drop significantly enough that it is worth waiting till summer before purchasing ?
Thank you!
Nick

Youre obviously going to be spending a lot more money if you buy a new 992. The general rule of thumb is buy the newest car you can comfortably afford. If you can comfortably afford a 992 my suggestion would be to wait and drive one and then decide. Also as the 992s come out the 991s will likely drop a little bit in price.

The 992 is a totally different car from a 997.2 or a 991.1 in so many ways. If your into the latest tech, wait for the 992. If you can afford it, wait for the 992. If you're looking for an excellent entry into a 911, buy the newest 991.1 you can find and enjoy a real Porsche driving experience.

For some reason people keep answering like you are proposing buying a 992!
The reality is that I think that the 2013 991.1 S you're thinking about wont get hit that much beyond normal depreciation - its probably taken the biggest hit a couple of years ago when it fell out of warranty. The better the specimen the more likely it will hold its value.
What you're probably going to see is the 991.2 cars take a bigger hit because they are so much closer to being an either/or option, whereas what your looking at is for a completely different buying option (and likely a different buyer).

It is a huge span in both years and technology between your oldest & newest versions in your post. 997.2 & 992. Also a huge difference in cost. Probably buy 2 997.2s for the cost of a 992. Whatever choice you make, good luck & enjoy. BTW my vote is 992.

If you look on car gurus depreciation curve the 2014 991 has actually started to appreciate in the past 4 months - an interesting trend
The bottom line is if you buy a new 992 you are going to take a significant loss over the first 3 years of ownership
If you buy a used CPO 991 from 2014 - 2016 most of the depreciation is already out of the vehicle
The question is if the trade off on having the newest technology and apple car play features and the like is worth the additional cost
For myself the biggest advantage of Porsche is the way they hold their value - my 997 Turbo has appreciated slightly a little bit every year for the last 3 years after it hit the bottom - I just bought a 2014 991 Turbo S and expect that could depreciate a bit more but not much more - personally I would never consider to but any of these cars new and take such a loss - to each his / her own
