Offer Price Question

Offer Price Question
I'm a newbie and am seriously considering buying a guard red over black C4S with 55K miles; no stand out mods or top end rebuild.
The car is well maintained, it’s been on the market for several months though not heavily marketed.
The current owner has lowered price a few Ks to low $40K; I’m thinking of offering $38K based on some cosmetic work needed, such as pitted windscreen and some minor dents etc.
Please let me know if this is a reasonable offer or if the asking price of $41,500 is reasonable.
Thanks.

Unless it's a 1998 and has a clean PPI, I think your offer of $38K is more than reasonable. Even if it's a 1998 with a clean PPI, I think that $38K is a good price.
People on this board and Rennlist will tell you of cars in more popular color combos, with mods, and/or with significant maintenance work in the books that are selling for $40-44K, so this one isn't particularly special such that it would justify no movement in price. In the end it will depend on how badly the seller wants to unload the car.

Bobby G thanks for your reply.
Its 1996 C4S, guard red over black, partial leather; the car is stock. Its shocks / struts, steering rack, clutch slave were replaced around 40K and otherwise is well maintained and in very good condition.
I first saw it on Auto Trader more than 4 months ago at $44K, the owner took it off as he did not get any serious offers. I contacted him; he is in no hurry to sell though is prepared to let it go for $41.5K.
It seems most 1996 / 1997 C4S on Autotrader and Cars.com with 50 – 80k are in the 39K-42K range asking prices. I’m not sure of the actual selling price of those sold in the last few months.
What is a reasonable offer price, provided the PPI does not show any major issues?
Thanks.
cap'sx51 - what year? which 993 model? Give as much detail as you can. Pics won't hurt either. Is it on Autotrader? Craigslist? Ebay?

If he's in no hurry to sell then he's probably firm on that price (for now). Just let him know that you've done your research and give him what you think based on your research is a fair offer.
