I had thought to let the level just drop down itself, but wanted to make sure no worries in doing that especially since I was getting more smoke than usual at start-up.

You may also find puffs of smoke upon re-starting your car after it was previously running during fast idle at cold start-up and not letting it get hot enough. (eg.) Cold start your car, back your car out of the garage, shut it down. Wash car, then restart, pufffff!

Sure do. It seems like when my oil runs in the half way mark, I really never have any puffs. Just when its full I get the occasional puf.
