Turbo Oil Sump / Drip Tank questions???
Turbo Oil Sump / Drip Tank questions???
Just a few quick question for you TT guys'...
What function does the oil sump / drip tank serve on your cars? Has anyone stock or otherwise, opted to remove it and run straight to the scavenge pump?
The reason I ask is because I just turbocharged my boxster and it's running a similar set up with a scavenge pump, but without the oil sump. So far so good, the only issue being is that the turbo is blowing out oil out of the downpipe and the turbine seal. I'm betting that this is due the restriction/design configuration of my current set up. Any 2 cents would be appreciated

The drip tank is there as a reservoir to give it a "chance" for the oil to be sucked up by the turbo scavenge pump, since the turbo pump lags a little against the oil press build up the the oil inlet of the turbo, if you are using a "gravity feed", you should place the turbos high enough for the oil to scavenge properly out of the turbos.
I'm using the same pump as the STS (rear mounted turbo guys) and the turbowerx pump they use to scavenge twins just fine ( I'm using a small single). So far it doesn't seem like the turbo is starved for oil, in fact it's coming apart because there seems to be too much of it

Oh quick edit:
I think I just fudged up the oil return when I started looking more into it. I've been using a 3/8th I.D return from the turbo to the scavenge pump. It looks like I was supposed to use at least 1/2" ID. Whoops ;x
