serious force needed shifting to/from 6th?

Hi everyone. Has anyone heard of this sort of problem before?
It seems I may be lucky for this problem to have shown up
a month before my warranty ends. My shift from fifth to 6th
takes a lot of effort like I'm cutting into a watermelon with a
butter knife. Coming out from 6th to 5th is about the same!
I did previously mention a problem occasionally finding first
at a stop. In that case, even second was balky, but I could
usually get into third, let out the clutch a bit, and then take
it back to first and get in without problem...
I had an independent shop check the linkage. They have
the tool to confirm the cables are adjusted perfectly, and they
were...
thanks for any ideas...
Joe

TCM is infamous around these parts
Sounds like your synchros may be wearing out. That should not happen on a newer car with as little time and miles on it as yours. I would definately have the dealer take a look at this before the warranty runs out as you may end up getting a new tranny.

Joe;

Do you ever 'get into it' in the early gears only to find you've overshot your speed target and immediatly go for 6th?

It goes something like this; Shift redline 1-2, close to same 2-3, woops going 80 in a 40 mph zone, shift 3-6.

What you do is put alot of stress on the syncros since the transmission has to be slowed over a much greater range to accomodate the lower engine rpm of 6th (but your tranny is still spinning near the redline). If you do this a lot, it shows up over time as a balky 5-6 shift-that syncro is shot.

No flame intended, hope that's not it and a oil change will solve your problem.

Regards,
BD

Hi all. I guess we'll never know what caused the problem.
Porsche replaced my tranny under warranty. I asked the
dealer if we could find out what went wrong, but he said
Porsche never even tells Porsche of North America what went
wrong...
The main problem was in the shift to/from sixth, which I
almost never used, and always did in a very leasurely
fashion.
I will always say that this sort of service is a powerful
reason for buying a Porsche.
