Is it possible to run a wideband such as the Zeitronix ZT-2, with an EGT and AFR, if i'm running straight pipes? ie no cats or mufflers.....

I've heard from a friend here that after going through the trouble, he ended up fusing/melting the sensors when running test pipes, which has rendered it useless.....
