996TT - items to look for when purchasing
What Speed Yellow said...but especially try accelerating up to about 5K on a downhill, then lift off the gas. Second should only pop out on deceleration, it will never pop under load.
Talequin - It's up to you to decide how many rock chips are acceptable or not. Personally, I prefer a few rock chips and original paint over the story of "there were rock chips so I had the whole front end repainted." Honestly, that's the proper way to repair rock chips, but I highly value factory original paint. It tells me the car has never been in an accident, which should be your primary concern.
That being said, my pristine pop-out turbo has zero rock chips when I purchased it with 26K miles
So she's a clean popper, lol.
Pop out actually doesn't bother me that much, I just rev through second. The biggest annoyance is on country roads, but 3rd works pretty well on these cars too.
That being said if I were in your position - I wouldn't buy a car that had it, it's a rather expensive repair and there's many TT's out there to pick from.

Thanks guys. This is really great stuff!
The only other gotcha I'm finding to check up on is the power steering assembly pressure line recall in 03 models as referenced by Mambodave's thread (sorry Dave, that sucks). Can anyone confirm at what point Porsche started accounting for this during production?
