GPS Tracking/Recording

I know this is off topic, but I bought a GisTEQ phototrackr for tracking our vacation photos, but turns out it's great in the car too. It records your location every second and the time you were there so you can play back your trip/drive to see where you went and GPS verify your speed. Then it downloads to your computer and shows the route in google maps. Pretty cool for $90.. I'll be taking it with me on my next concourse drive - they always find the most scenic routes with covered bridges, etc, but they never disclose the route ahead of time or give you a map for fear the cops will find out... but now i'll be able to record the entire course.

It's primary purpose is when you take photos it geotags them based on the time they were taken if you sync your camera's clock to it. Then you can upload them to google maps or flickr and see where you were when you took them... but even if it didn't do that it'll be great for GPS verifying your speed. I don't know if 1 sec samples is good enough for track use, but with accuracy of a few feet it might tell you something about your runs after the fact. http://gisteq.com/

Hmm, it might even help you fight a ticket after the fact if it disagreed with the radar. I doubt that though.

I don't know what else to say about it. My wife bought it for me for my birthday. It's smaller than a pack of cigarettes and it records lat/lon/time/altitude every second for up to 20 hours or so.. Then you connect to your computer with usb cable and it plots each "trip" where a trip can be reset on the device.. so you can see where you were overlaid on google maps along with your speed at that time. When I first got it out of the box I turned it on and walked around my house and plugged it back in and looked at my "trip" on google maps with the satellite view and it was spot on compared to where I walked. Like I said, for $90 or whatever it is, it's pretty cool.

I'm not much of a track guy, so I'll be using it for it's ability to add lat/lon to EXIF jpeg photos for when we travel, but I thought I'd share it here because I'm both a Porsche guy and a gadget guy and this was one of the better gadgets I've seen recently and has crossover potential. We travel out of the country every few months and share photos with friends and they're always asking, where was this or that and now I won't have to tell them - picassa and flickr both support geocoded photos so every photo will have a physical location so they can see right where we were standing when the photo was taken.

Oh and this is about 1/6th the cost of traqmate.. I'm sure it doesn't do everything the same or anything, but for less than $100, it seems to be a good value.
