XM Radio options for 2003 turbo ?

Hey chaps,

About two weeks back I traded my 2000 996 for a 2003 996 turbo.
I had a pioneer double din nav that I fitted in the 996 and I had XM radio.

I miss XM terribly, I'd forgotten how quickly you get bored with CD's and how crap FM radio is.

Anyway, fast forward to today. I took the car to my trusty audio guys and they took a look at it and said it's running the MOST optical bus from the head unit to the amp and then wires from there out to the speakers and a 1ohm sub at the back. I have bose speakers and a CDR23 at the front. The consensus was I needed to spend $2k and install a new amp (not optical) and new head unit , plus a bunch of other stuff and a new sub (because no one can drive 1ohm subs apparently) just to get my XM radio fix.

I'd be happy to spend $1k on something decent, but $2k seemed out of line, plus they are talking about bypassing the factory optical stuff.

I just wondered if any of you guys have XM radio, or have integrated other head units into the factory MOST bus ? Of maybe even if someone in the Silicon Valley bay area has a recommendation for an audio shop that can deal with optical stuff ?

Really, all I want is XM radio, but I'm not quiet at the FM modulator desperation level yet, but I'm getting there.

:-)

tjj7ff is infamous around these parts
I have an 03 and installed the AVIC D1, with XM and iPod adapters as well as a bass amp to drive the Bose bass speakers in the rear shelf. I had to bypass the MOST optical bus in order for it to work. Essentially, the only OEM parts that were used are the speakers. The bass amp was placed in the boot where the CD changer was located. The whole this cost me $1,200 a few years ago. It shouldn't cost you near that much if you already have the Pioneer head unit. AudioExcellance did the work on mine in Orlando. Perhaps they are in CA?
