Is the new BMW M6 really that easy to toast ?
M6...
Several months ago, when my car had only a reflash on the stock k16s and a BMC air filter,I raced an M6 coupe from rolling 1st until 220km 2 times. Both times I was about 4 car lenghts ahead. The distance between us was made after 100km...Until 100km we were almost head to head...also at the same day I raced an F360(spider) from standstill on very good road surface quality...1st gear i was 1 car lenght ahead,2nd gear 1,5 and when I put 3rd,i thought that the Ferrari hit the brakes...at 200km there was about 10car lenghts of distance...So the M6 is way faster than the F360,especcially at high km...however I did not have the chance to race an M6 with a completely stock 996TT...
M6's arent great below 100, it's like the anti 996TT which is great below 100, but after 100 it will walk a 996 TT (stock) pretty hard.
And you never know with M's if they had time to switch the car to P500 mode, because if they dont you are racing a 400 hp M6, not 500, and the large majority of owners arent enthusiastic enough to program the system so that they can just hit the M button and go, and if the dealer did it for them, they probably forgot what it does.
Stock for stock on a K16 TT, the M6 will pwn it.

And I pity anyone trying to pit their M6 against a TT on the twisties or the track.
Why in the world would a company make a 500hp car only have 400hp??? Not to start a flame or anything but are you sure you got your facts right?
All my runs against the M6 were at speeds above 100MPH and up to 150mph. I would have gone faster but then I would have lost sight of him.

It has a button that you press to switch between I believe 5 levels of power. The car is a pain in the butt to drive with the SMG and the power buttons. It also only gets 10mpg taking it easy.
I was going to get one but after a week in one I was really disappointed. To all the M drivers out there please dont take offence to what I am saying, its just my taste.

Yes I'm positive, it's rather complicated too, there are varying degrees of power (400,500) and those combinations along with the suspension settings and traction control make up various settings you can use and you have to program the "M" button for one touch switching or you'll spend all day pushing buttons.
But I can promise you a new M5 or M6 cant even run in P500 mode because the dealer programs it in after you break the car in. So yes you can surely drive an M5 or M6 with 400 hp.
I have an M5, so it's pretty much an M6, just a hair slower.
Below 60-70 mph, the M5 is a bit anemic. It struggles for traction in 1st, and sometimes 2nd, but once you get into 3rd, it's making good power, and will gradually pull away from a stock 996TT. At those speeds, the suspension settings don't make a difference. P500 vs P400 makes a difference, as does the transmission setting, but assuming you're in P500 S6, the M5 is a beast.
Modified 996TTs, and base 997TTs are indeed faster, though.

I agree.
I test drove an M5, going into it expecting a car that I would really love. Afterwards, I decided that I couldn't buy a car like that. I'm not the type that can't adapt to technology easily either. I also don't like either transmission choice.
The MPG is pathetic too; might as well drive it in P500 all day because it's only going to make it 9 opposed to 10 MPG. Makes an old Dodge Viper look like a more economical choice. It seems like all of BMW's high-revving, high-HP/low-TQ M engines get terrible gas mileage.
Aside from whats quicker, the M6 is a beautiful car. Super nice on the inside, very sexy lines on the outside. I almost traded in my 911TT for a white M6 here locally last week. The 911 depreciated so nasty in this environment that I just backed out of the deal cause its not worth it. But the M6 is fast indeed, don't think its not.
I have a m6 ....and it is a MAJOR disappointment. Soul less, hideous gas mileage ...my gt700 996tt had better gas mileage, and the suspension is horrid. Needless to say I will be returning mine as soon as the 2 year lease is up.
yep ... agreed, good lookin car. The coupe for me, not the rag. I like the leather and the lines of the car. Actually I'd probably rather have an M5 come to think of it.
meh...
If i had a choice however, i'd definately go for a 997 tt over a M anything anyday...
Porsche, there is no substitute.

Hi Guys - First post and thought i'd make it relevant !!
Have a look at www.drivers-republic.com these guys are ex-Evo magazine and Autocar for those familiar with the UK auto publishing scene - anyway, they have a video of a 997tt v M6 shootout from 30 to 160mph... the results may suprise some, but the M6 is seriously quick against pretty much anything thats stock, including the 7tt.
100-150mph the M6 will pull on a 7tt, autocar's own published datalogged times in their road tests indicate it, and this video illustrates it.
Been lurking on the 6 for a long time - source of a lot of interesting info, and some very interesting projects and innovation !
Thanks guys.
p.s. not sure if its clear in my profile... am running an 03 X50 (pretty much stock)

Thanks for the welcome Jim.
Its always good to get both sides but for sure theres a lot more guys working on their own cars here so posters here have a lot of cred, plus the tuning community is far more prolific than the UK scene as you know.
Having said that, I'm UK based and the top tuning garages here know their onions inside out & ultimately I'll be dealing with them when I upgrade my motor, but theres no substitute for knowledge wherever you can get it & on a online technical level, i've learned the most from both the 6 and RL !
