Some turbo questions from a noob.
Some turbo questions from a noob.
Hey guys. First let me say, what an amazing site. I've been an avid corvette owner since I was 21. Since then, I've owned several of them. Well, I believe I'm going a different route. I've always loved the TT Porsche's and am in a position to buy one if I feel comfortable enough doing so. That leads me to several questions and I'm more than open to suggestions or opinions.
It looks like my price range is going to keep me to the 2001-2003 models. So here goes:
What are some of the differences between them, hp, options available, etc?
How is maintenance on the TT cars? To replace a clutch in my Z06 it cost aroud $2k parts and labor and that was a decent clutch. How about on the Porsche?
I see some of the '01 low mileage TT cars going for the price of the '03 40-50k mileage TT cars. When should I be concerned with the turbo going out?
Any projected 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile times that I can compare to what I'm used to?
I am also interested in hearing what I should be looking for when making my decision. You guys have the hands on experience when it comes to these cars, so I'm hoping you can help me out.
Again, thank you in advance.
Richard

No hp difference between the 01-03 unless the car had the X50 option.
The 996TT is close to bullet proof for a worldclass sports car. I've owned two and never had any major repairs. Never had to replace my stock clutch but if you go for power mods above 600hp, you'll need a stronger clutch which should cost you about $5K. I don't think you need to worry about the turbos going out at 40-50K miles.
As for 1/4, low 12s for stock car; 11s for modded car; 10s for HIGHLY modded car.
Your best bet is to buy an already modded car from one of the members here where somebody has already dumped $20-40K in upgrades. Check for FS section.

Some additional changes:
MY02 - Added Glove box
MY02 - Premium Bose sound system became standard
MY02 - Bumperettes removed (I believe?)
MY03 - Sound system went to a fiber optic communication bus (MOST). This complicates making changes to the stock sound system.
MY05 - Added "Turbo S" trim
