Seat backs
FWIW, lengthy post: I will share my experience with 996 seat backs. I bought a set of 996 black hard back seats and intended to re-dye them blue to match the interior of my 993. They arrived in scuffed and worn condition so I thought I would take another approach and see what I could do with 993 seats. That's another story, though.
Since I had the set of crappy looking 996 seats that I wasn't going to use, I tried to sell them, to no avail. For those interested, I paid $1,800 from Porschapart in Ontario, Canada. Plus $450 shipping. I went thru the DIY leather dyeing stuff online and got a good feel for sanding, prepping and re-dyeing the leather. I ordered dye in the 996 black and applied it first with a brush (could see the stroke lines a bit), then with wet paper towels (too much dye build up), and finally the way I would recommend - ordered the spray dye from World Upholstery http://www.worlduph.com/porsche11.htm
To quote from the site: "New - we can now supply matching dye in spray cans for all Porsche colors.. 000-9409 $18.00, 12oz"
The spray can be applied in-expertly and yet will dry to a very nice look. I would suggest taking time to sand and prep the seats as the DIY info suggests.
As to seat backs, that's where the real fun started. The seats were out of the car which made it somewhat easier. However, you should know that to take off the skins takes about 1 minute per seat, no charge at the upholstery shop. The skins are trimmed in a plastic that fits into the hard back edges. I paid 1 hour of labor ($85) for them to be re-installed after I took the backs off and had them painted and then re-attached. I am sure you can be charged a lot more than this for removal and re-install, though.
The backs came with the useless (to me) pouch and coat hook. There is a UK site that sells an alum-look crest as a replacement for the coat hook for about $20. I filled the holes into which the pouch attaches (a time-consuming effort, with a lot of trial and error on what to use - I am completely clueless about stuff like this). Then I sanded the crap out of them to get a really smooth surface and primered the backs. I took the backs to a body shop and was charged $100 per seat back for painting. Then back to the upholstery shop to have the skins reattached (see above).
Then I sold the seats for about half what I had in them. The guy who bought them asked if they had ever been used; so he was delighted in proportion to how much I was disappointed in the experience.
BTW, if the seats are out, it is a simple two-lead connection to a 12-volt dry cell to get them to tilt and lay back.
In summary, the 993 comfort seats are soft back and I don't recall if the 996 comfort seats have a plastic back. If not, then the endless search for reasonably priced hard back seats begins. OR (a HUGE "or") ...
You can do what I did. Order a set of seat back frames for hard-back sport seats (about $900 from Sunset), Order hard back foam cushions (about $400 for a set). Order a set of upper skins (about $600 a set) and convert your comfort seats to hardback.
Any way you go it is a pricey effort, but a great look. I am only sorry that I had to traverse the learning curve. Guess it's just part of the slide (down the slippery slope).
Hope this helps.
