After one week the clutch is done: Advice re: replacment

Well, after about one week of driving my new-to-me turbo, the clutch is now obviouisly slipping under high boost in 3rd and 4th, so its time to spring for a new one. I've got the EVOM's stage 1 kit (chip, d.v.'s, intake, plugs), and see sustained 1.1 bar of boost with occasional spikes to 1.2.

Is the consensus that I should go with a heavier duty clutch than the stock unit? I'm thinking about upgrading the clutch, but I don't want to make it too noisy/hard to operate, lest my wife not want to drive the car (I know, that wouldn't be a bad thing, but I want her to like driving it).

What do you guys recommend. I'd like a bit more clamping force without too much change to clutch feel/operation. Also, if you have recomendations, if you could also tell me where you think I could get the best price, I'd appreciate it. Scott.

If I were in your shoes, it's seems the logical thing to do would be call Evoms and ask them what they recommend to go with their program. They have the background and knowledge to give you bonafide information. More so than 95% on here.

It really depends on what upgrades you plan on doing in the future. If you're going to stick with a stage 1 or 2 car, I'd probably just do a stage 1 or 2 clutch from EVOMS. They're a fully faced disc, as opposed to having pucks, so it will be smooth just like stock. You can also use these with your OEM dual mass flywheel, so you won't get any stalling or the rattling associated with a lightweight flywheel.

If you plan on doing a 600+ HP package, I'd probably just jump straight to a Stage 3 clutch from EVOMS. It has pucks on the face of the disc since it's more of a race clutch, but it's surprisingly drivable. It also retains the OEM dual mass flywheel. I personally run one of these clutches in my car, and I don't mind it at all. It's a bit trickier than stock, but after driving it for a few hundred miles, you quickly get the hang of it.

Member John D, who owns Speedtech, offers another solution for higher HP cars. He runs it in his 700 HP car and is pleased with it. It is fully faced as well, so it may be more streetable than the Stage 3 I run. I think a few other members here run it as well, so maybe they'll give some feedback.

Just my $0.02...

I recently put a lwfw clutch from Kevin at Ultimate Moterwerks and love it. Very light rattle in neutral but actually easier to use and less stalling than my stock clutch. Now I'm ready if I want to add more power.

I did a full clutch and LWFW with Kevin at UMW> every little part needed came in the box.

It is a Sachs based unit. LWFW I think is the 964RS unit.

I think it is good to either 600 or 700hp. I discussed my issues with Kevin and he sent it. I did searches on the net at this and other boards and found that there was near 100% satisfaction with this. And, he got it to my mechanic by the next AM with me calling him at 5PM his time....or something like that in terms of time. He really helped me out.

Lots of ways to slice a tomato....do some research, talk to people. This is but one data point. I'd go with a "full kit solution" and not try to make it piece by piece. If you have a problem, ask yourself who will be the one to accept blaim and help you.....

No issues for over 18m.

Jeff
