Sorry to hear, man. I hope it's not major.

I think you are near Daly City right? Have you ever talked to Jimmy @ Junipero Serra Auto there? Very nice shop and works mostly on Porsches and some Benz. I am taking my car there tmrw to find a boost/vacuum leak.

Maybe take it by there and check it out?

Mine makes the same sound. I took it to Eurosport Racing and had the lifters replaced. Still makes the sound. I was told that it is common for these cars to make a rattling sound by the oil pump. Something about a splined shaft that mates with it is somewhat skewed so it makes a rattling sound. A good way to check is, while the car is stationary, blip the throttle and you'll hear a kind of "marbles in a can" rattling kind of sound for around 1/2 sec. It seems the rattling from blipping the throttle eliminates the tapping sound and then returns when the "marbles in a can" sound goes away. I almost think it is one and the same. Possibly, tension is taken away from the pump so the splined shaft kind of flops around and then when tension is reapplied you get a more uniform tapping sound. Not much help for the problem, but a little more information never hurts.

Quote: A fellow 6Speeder, adeoosis, just sent me a video that sounds exactly like the issue I observed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ8mNVI9_G8

It sounds dead-on exactly the sound coming from my engine. The motor ran fine after the short gear and highway runs since the amount of pull never changed...it's when I was at my driveway that I heard that ticking sound getting louder and louder. Does anyone know the amount of labor to check for an intermediate shaft failure?
In his case kevin from UMW sent him a new motor.

intermediate schaft failure is a noise that porsche germany knows....no trouble about this....if it goes away over rpm 1200 its in tolerance...not nice but nothing to alarm....

if it is over 1200 rpm real loud, something is wrong

sorry my english is not the best, but be shure the intermedaite shaft problem has a greate tolerance beetween quite and loud

temperatur of engine (hot engine is better) and quality of oil are parameters of noise level...hot engine and castrol 10w 60 reduce this noise a little

if your engine have another failure the above write is wrong...if by cold engine with cold oil the noise begins after 3 minutes , you can be shure the intermediate shaft has a great tolerance (but you dont has to go in trouble with this symptom around 800 till 1200rpm)

So was the failure intermediate shaft or rod bearing?

My car(and every other turbo I ve heard)makes a glan-glan noise when idling...not too loud but noticeable...Porsche Athens says its normal...You call it intermidiate shaft failure?I think it is because the car has dry sump and needs to be revved over idle to fully lubricate timing chain...Also what kind of oil you suggest?10w60?

It may be normal but the only weird thing is this the first time the motor has sounded/acted like this after over a year with the current mods on my sig below.

No problem. He said he used to be on 6speed all the time years ago but is now too busy! That's not a bad thing I guess...

I am gonna have him install my turbo upgrade when I decide which kit I am going with.

Good luck with your diagnosis.

So after shooting the "knocking" video I let the motor just sit for about 3 days until taking it to Jimmy of Junipero Serra Auto who specializes in Porsches (work precluded me from following up right away). As a matter of fact I believe his dad, George, who works with Jimmy, both used to be mechanics of Ruf Germany. In any case, upon start-up the motor started normally. Weird! In any case, I brought it to the shop, which is about 2 miles away from where the TT was garaged. When I arrived at the shop the motor still ran and idled fine. I left it with Jimmy over-night for him to run various diagnostics and use a stethiscope to check for any possible issues. After a $120 later, Jimmy diagnosed the issue as a probable stuck "valve" lifter which basically "cured" itself. Whew! Some others from this board concluded the same diagnosis. I took it home and proceeded to put buslengths on a EVO X to celebrate!

Engine idling the way it supposed to...

Whew, great news bro. Yeah, Jimmy is my new P-car specialist and he is close to me too. And yes he told me he did an internship for RUF many years ago, so that's never a bad thing.

Sounds like he took good care of you. Good. That was a close call for you!

I'm going to see Jimmy tmrw (removing that damn V-flow intake! LOL) and will chat with him about your car a bit.

So who have you taken your car to before now for work/troubleshooting?

Cheers
