Unusual Symptoms Post Techart PSS9 Install
Unusual Symptoms Post Techart PSS9 Install
Well running on smooth pavement these coil-overs & H&R Sway bars have transformed this ride as others have mentioned.
Unfortunately over mild bumps (eg speed bumps etc) there seems to be a tremendous amount of moaning/groaning from the front end (sounds more like an old Chevy than TT) and the rears feel like they maxing out by either hitting bump stocks or the sway bars hitting the rear control arms?
Having read many posts regarding the over lowering of this system I reframed from slamming the car and lowered it only approx an inch from stock. Installation was done by a well respected shop in Southern CA and the results quite disappointing. Before returning to the installer any suggestions on what might cause these symptoms most appreciated. At some point today I must measure exact front and rear ride height to verify that it is with in spec. Rear using factory drop links and front using OEM adjustable almost maxed to avoid the sway bar rubbing on the drive shafts.
Incidentally 1 day after install the 'Break Wear' dash light has illuminated. Could any break issues be attributed to this new suspension and its alignment?
All thoughts most appreciated.
Cheers,
J

There is a thrust washer that you should install in the front to eliminate the "boing" sound, which happens when the spring gets a lot of tension on it from spinning in the perch and then releases with a "boing" sound. Eventually, when the forces build up again as it reaches the max tolerance , it "boings" again, to release the pressure. The thrust washer enables the spring to spin freely and not build up tension. Is this part of your problem?

I went through your troubles about 2 months ago...
1)for fronr sway bar,use adjustable sway bar links and enlarge them so when the car is on the road and the wheel full turned, sway bar does not touch left or right front shaft...
2)for rear sway bar, contact Dan at Vivid racing to send you adjustable rear sway bar links(from mazdaRX8) and make them about 2cm longer than stock ones...by doing so you will not have contact between sway bar and rear trailing arm...Otherwise contact will occur if you stiffen the sway bar...hurting the trailing arm...
3)PSS 9 is not designed for lowering the car...what a shame...However,because i bought it and wanted my car to be extreme low,i opened the shocks and enlarged piston travel from inside about 1inch...Also i cut bumpstops at half gaining another inch...Normal travel of pss piston is 5,6cm...My final travel was 11cm...When the car sat on the road it still had 4cm of travel down and 6 to travel up...So it was fine concerned it is a sports car...With stock pss lowered to GT2 specs, the car touches bumpstops when sit on the road...what you felt was the bumpstops getting stiffer as they were pressed...

Thanks for taking the time to respond guys....most appreciated.
John: Are you able to be a little more specific in terms of where this thrust washer is located?
skandalis447: Adjustable drop links are on the front and extended as far as poss. When wheels fully turned there is clearance to the control arms but I suspect not enough when turning on a bumpy surface and compressing the system. Perhaps there is contact being made here all though the sounds are more groaning that the clunk I would expect from metal to metal contact.
Shall add drop links to the rear and re-check. What sway bars are you running?
Best,
J

I use GT3 sway bars...that are not designed for use in the TT...and have more troubles than HR...If you have the correct HR sway bars, the problem on the front one is the sway bar contacts HALF SHAFT,not control arm...you will see the signs on the shafts...Again for the rear with GT3 bars adjustable sway bar links are essential...Make a search, about 2 weeks ago i added pictures about it...

Odd.....the TT this setup came off (I bought used) used the exact same set up with out issue including factory rear drop links??
None the less.......are drop links something I can pick up locally here in LA from say Pelican?
Cheers,

Here is a picture of the bearings. The springs rest on them and spin freely, relieving tension, rather than the usual bind and then pop noise.
