Yes $300 is extreme for a small cylinder especially one which seems to fail.
But relative to some other Porsche pricing, maybe not too bad.
The other options such as electric actuators are a project. If you have the time and inclination, that'd be my choice. Either that or just fix the thing in the up position.

Would it not be an option to seal around the end cap in order to create a sealed end to the brass cylinder, thereby stopping any possibility of a leak?
I'm assuming brazing wouldn't be an option due to heat build up
But somekind of sealant?
........The source of the fluid leaks is the seal inside this brass cylinder. The cylinder has its end caps sealed in place by having its circumference rolled down into mating depressions on the end caps. I can find no simple way to dismantle this rolled seal without destroying the brass cylinder tube.........
