Nice RTurbo for sale (not a conversion)
Sean I didn't mean to offend, I'm certainly not talking about your GT2. A "franken turbo" to me is that $47K 996TT with a bunch of mods that is probably worth less than it was without the mods. I would hardly compare such a car to a Ruf VIN R Turbo, even if it could beat it in a drag race who cares?

So your saying that a 550 ruf is so great that no one can build/tune a 996tt to equal it? that is ridiculous. I have seen several ruf cars up close and you definitely pony up for the name. Not worth it IMO. I'll take my franken turbo any day. In fact I know of one ruf that went from being a ruf back to being a franken turbo, ultimately faster. Gotta love how a company plagiarizes a porsche product and gives it a new vin like they made it themselves. I think Gemballa might do this as well. Sorry, but if you are going to do that, then actually make the car yourself, don't use someone elses product. A ruf is still a tuner car, plain and simple IMO.
951, since you have seen the cars up close what did you think about the IRC? How about the body work on the narrow body? Pretty nice dont you think? Do you really think a tuner could do that any better?
Btw Ruf is a manufacturer not a tuner, his vin cars start off as a plain tub everything else is changed. The new CTR 3 is a blank sheet supercar. The conversions are different of course, but they still hold their value compared to tuned cars.

Ruf snob

plagiarizes a porsche....I don't think Porsche even thinks that
went from a ruf back to a turbo...impossible
still just a tuner car....OMG they were doing this $hit before most poeple on this board were born
new vin like they made it themselves...You don't thing this an agreement WITH Porsche...geeeez and as far as I know the only one Porsche allows to do it.
All new info to me....
The CTR was built in 1987
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RUF_CTR
0-60 in 4 sec.
top spead 211 mph.
spanked everything in its day.
RT 12 is 0-60 in 3.2 top spead of 219
Never intended the original post to start a pissing contest. Sorry bout that.
I want that car so bad but I think a divorce attorney would have to get involved and it would start to get ridiculously expensive...
Its all good Doug....I just like to stir the pot a bit now and then
Also, I have no scorn for the fdorn
Lets put it this way, Ruf is like an old tenured professor at an Ivy League college who does great analysis of other peoples work and improves on it in a conservative fasion. No envelope pushing but realiable and quaranteed. Also very pricey.
Our Proto/EPL (and apparently EVO is back at the front again) cars are well thought out albeit cutting edge products that are less expensive, better performing but also much riskier. People are waiting around to see if we blow our motors and maybe then deciding to follow. However, even if I blew my motor I could rebuild for about the price of an RT12.
We are the "start ups" of Porsche tuning.

fdorn,
An RT 12 came out to the track one day for a 60-130 event and ran in the 7's.
Doug,
The 24/18, exhaust, headers, injecters, upgraded clutch package is well proven now and can be done and tuned for under 15K.

The Ruf is an expensive tuner car with an upscale image. If you are into collecting, it will most likely hold some additional value in terns of future re-sale. If you desire the "exclusivity" of the Ruf name, then it's a good choice too.
However, if you are trying to maximize the performance of your Porsche 996TT, it's not the best option, as there are other companies that can provide improved performance and at considerably less expense. I was going to do the Ruf 550 conversion a few years back and personally, I am glad I did not. I would have ended up like the guy with the Ruf that upgraded his tubos and tune for more power. Early in the 996TT game, the Ruf's were very quick vs. other 996TT cars, but those days are long gone. They are nice to see, but after seeing several, you begin to realize it's mostly badging. The tach with the Ruf name and hood badge look cool.

here is a good article on the Ruf R turbo. Narrow Body. Which I am no fan of and is based off of the carrera. The car has an excellent build spec, with nearly everything you would want in a modded turbo. However, I see nothing there that could not be done by any of the well known tuners available out there. And I would rather have it all in a Turbo, since at the end of the day the Ruf R is still a narrow body carrera. Just my opinion, but I would rather spend less on the name and more on the performance.

Great sports car, but then again so is the turbo.
As for the fastest. That is a dynamic term. What is fast today is not so fast tomorrow. Is the porsche one of the fastest? yes, if you say no, then you have not read about some of the cars on this forum. Cars that can hit 200mph and more in one mile are in the upper stratosphere of the worlds fastest cars.

no problem. one hell of a car. After seeing that there is a lot of depth to their cars, I can see the appeal.
