Looking for feedback on 997 short shifter
I know a lot of you guys have installed the OEM 997 shifter and like it. But what about the 997 short shifter ? Anybody any experiences to share ?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
I have a 996TT. I paid about $400 and it is worth every penny. I also paid to have it installed because I did not want to damage my interior. I have read it is a pretty easy DIY if your into that. Bottom line is that short shifter should have been in the car stock in the first place. It makes it feel like the sports car it is. It shifts real smooth and feels nice and tight. I have not missed a shift or had any problems with adjustments, grinding etc. So far my mods this year are the CF GT2 wing decklid, 997SSK, and a Valentine One. I am very happy with everything and can't wait to drive my car in the morning.
I never had a short shifter of any kind before, but with my new 997 recently installed the OEM 997 SSK. You can search my name to find that post, but short story is I moaned and groaned about whether I should DIY and eventually I was peer shamed by the fine gents on this board to give it a try, and while I did employ the safety crutch of having a paid tech walk me through some spots, I was able to say my hands and only my hands touched every part of that install from beginning to end.
Definitely will be able to do it faster the next time around. So, for the DIY part of your question - yea, if you can follow IKEA simple instructions and can set aside at worst case 4 hours, anyone should be able to DIY. At least an hour was just bs chatting though so I'm gonna call my first try as 3 hours, and next time around probably be able to do it 2 hours easy.
How it feels - I've had it a few weeks now so pretty much feels "natural", but the same day I had it in, I could feel as advertised it takes a little bit more, just a tiny bit, more pressure to move the shifter up and down. After a couple days, you really won't remember what "effort" it took from stock vs. SSK version. (edit - I suppose you'll remember from an intellectual point of view, but not really from a muscle memory "feel" point of view. The SSK will just seem to be how it is and how it should have been from the start)
The throw distance or "feel" seems a heck of a lot shorter than the advertised 25% or 35% - not sure what the official numbers advertised are, but either way it seems to feel a lot shorter, in a good way.
The notch feel or sensation of shifting outside of the throw distance and speed of shifting is pretty much identical I'd say to the stock 997 shifter. Has a nice solid feel as it locks in, and sideways traverse free-movement seems the same too.
Overall, as many, many people have mentioned, the best quick/easy mod you can do for your pcar. I bought mine from Sunset Porsche in Oregon for $363 plus about $9 in shipping to California. Labor if you have someone do it is all over the place, but what I paid my tech to help answer questions and explain the steps was an investment in myself for future DIY jobs, so I don't consider that a cost of putting in my SSK.
Oh last item - the reported observation of sometimes hard to shift into first, especially when cold, honestly I don't have any difference. Whether stock 997 shifter or OEM 997 SSK, they both go into first fairly easily but when it is a little stuck, it's the same. No more or less in frequency, and the same conditions - cold start, and sometimes at a light when in neutral and trying to shift into first. I just roll the car a tiny fraction in 2nd, and then 99.9% of the time I can just glide it into 1st.

I had the stock OEM 997 shifter, and installed the OEM 997 SSK (as opposed to various aftermarket 997 short shift kits).
