Power steering pump went south
Lucky for me because I thought it was something motor related since the sound was exactly in line with my engine rpm's. And we caught it before it caused an inferno. I'll get a phone call later today with the $ damage report. At least it should be fixed for the DE this weekend.
Most noticeable at lower rpm before the sound was overtaken by the exhaust. It was in sync with engine rpm's and kind of a gear growling sound. It wasn't gears but the pump, but that's the best description I can give.
New pump, a 997 part number, is $1100 from Porsche with a 2 year warranty. Rebuild would have been $650. I went new for the warranty.

curiously, i seem to have a busted power steering pump as well last week, i'd best describe the noise as a high rpm rattle (which progressively got louder). sadly had to call it a day at the track.
just picked my car up, have new pump (997 part) and it all sounds so much better now. while it lists for $1100, you should be paying much less for it.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that Larry. I am beginning to believe that these cars know when you are going to a DE and insist on last minute repairs...
Let us know how the new suspension works out.

Well due to my tech's scheduling constraints, it was either fix the PS pump and do this weekend's DE, or do the suspension and risk a Pentosin bonfire. I chose the former and will do the suspension in 2 weeks.
I would have gone with Suncoast if I had been thinking clearly, but to tell you the truth, after worrying that my problem was possibly a $20,000 engine job, $1100 seemed cheap and I just let my shop make a few bucks. A fool and his money are easily parted I guess.
