Varying clutch pedal feel

Yesterday when driving my 996tt the clutch pedal would go soft and then hard kind of on random intervals. More so when cold it would stay hard. Anyone know what could be the issue? I've had to add steering fluid before as well... Don't know if this is linked to the same issue. If I remember correctly the clutch and steering use the same fluid???

Thanks

I recently had to replace the clutch accumulator. In my case, the clutch was very hard before starting the car, and then even after starting it, the feel would be harsh and springy. It was a cheap fix. But the clutch should be pretty hard to press if it's a clutch accumulator issue.

Thanks for the reply. Can you recommend a place in the Chicago area or Northern burbs to take it in to?

situation mirrors mine also. very stiff until replaced the accumulator, now smooth like butter, always. was $168.00 for parts as my engine was out. fluid on the house along with oil.. no labor from dealer.

also..was leaking pentosin from the steering fluid reservoir under the trunk hood, which i noticed.. but was the tech that connected the accumulator issue with the leak.. well, that and he felt the clutch!

Did they also replace your slave cylinder? I ask because I was led to believe that a leaky steering fluid resevoir indicated a bad clutch slave cylinder. It's good to know that replacing the accumulator alone fixed the pedal feel and the steering fluid leak if that is the case with your car.

they didn't... and given the amount of time this tech has spent on my car.. he would've spared me no bad news. so i have to assume?! it's ok. i actually consider this fortunate as the discovery of the clutch situation, was a result of him having to drop the engine TWICE after they repaired my 2nd gear synchro etc under warranty, which then led to a leak which he repaired. not the rms.

..and given the engine was dropped the second time to fix the leak, it was no add'l labor to me to have the accumulator replaced, only the part and an oil filter were my costs. all the other work was covered under warranty and they've been over this car now top to bottom, had the 30 k sched "service" ( whatever that really is.. ) oil and filters changed etc.. and it runs like it. it's really smooth and runs better than when i first took it.

this is all stuff that developed AFTER it was "certified" and bought by me, so the d'ship has been involved every step of the way.

the end result for me is that i can't really drive the sh*t out of it, until wearing out stuff is no longer an issue financially. when i first bought the car, i was pushing it pretty hard for the first few k miles, but well within the limits of its design. the good news is that kind of driving uncovered issues that were about to become problems,.. and they did..

i'm hoping i'm done with the shop.. for awhile.

Absolutely. Call Al at Chicago Performance & Tuning at: 708-343-8677. He took care of this issue for me just last week. Their website is: http://www.gocpt.com
