You gotta classify to get at the "best", there is so much to choose from.
Longest winning record: the 956/962.
Biggest turning point for Porsche: 917.
Biggest "giant killer": the Hurley Haywood RS at Sebring in the 70's.
The one the put Porsche on the map: 550 RS "Lil Bastard".
Prettiest: 908 or 906 (IMHO)
Fastest flop: Mobey Dick.
There are others out there, what about some opinions?

I would have to say the 917.
Factoid: "Donohue drove this car in 1975 on the Talladega Speedway and broke the 'World's Closed Course Speed record'. Donohue made a four-lap run with an average speed of 221.120 mph according to calculations he reached 250 mph on the straits, this record has not been broken since. It was not only fast but also quick as it accelerated from a standstill to 200 km/h in an amazing 5.3 seconds. After this success Porsche withdrew because of the reduced interest in the CanAm and the huge costs. Porsche themselves created the lack of interest; they out-classed their competitors both in budget and speed that almost all factory-teams (McLaren and Lola) withdrew, only Shadow remained but wasn't able to challenge the Turbo-panzer." When you can dominate like that, make everyone else give up, that is something amazing.
In a recently episode of Ă¢â‚¬Å“Ultimate Cars: RacersĂ¢â‚¬Â on Science Channel, they rated the 917 as the greatest racer of all time. Check out the show, itĂ¢â‚¬â„¢s pretty interesting.
