electrical experts please help

i was wondering if you guys can help me out , i have a few (strang) questions that i need to know for a 2001 tt manual 996 ;

-anyone know where i can find the PCM pinout diagrams?

-does the dashboard use a CAN-BUS system for the guages or is it just a regular signal?

- where is the speed sensor located and anyidea what is the ppm (puls per mile) rate is?

-where is the oil pressure sending unit located and what is its voltage output range?

-where is the coolant temprature sensor located and what is its output voltage range?

thanks in advance for your help!

-anyone know where i can find the PCM pinout diagrams?

-- Ask if Porsche dealer service department tech will print you the page that gives these pinouts. I have factory manuals for the 986 Boxster and 996 Carrera but nothing for the 996 Turbo.

-does the dashboard use a CAN-BUS system for the guages or is it just a regular signal?

-- Check with Porsche tech. My 08 Cayman S used KWP2000 for OBD2 communication and CAN for "comfort bus" (instrument cluster controller) communication. My 02 Boxster uses IS0-9141-2 for OBD2. Not sure what else is used. Too lazy to look at OBD2 connector and see what pin sockets are populated. My '03 Turbo uses KWP2000 and again I've never really bothered to examine its OBD2 connector to see what other pins are present. Nor have I hooked up any bus monitoring tool to see what other buses are in use. (I did hook up bus monitoring tool when I had my Cayman S in for a radio problem and captured the bus activity and was able to ask the tech some questions. However, techs are usually not OBD2 or vehicle communication experts.)

- where is the speed sensor located and anyidea what is the ppm (puls per mile) rate is?

-- Speed sensor located on tranny, at least has a signal coming out of transmission. There are ways to determine what the signal is, pulses per mile once you locate the sensor's output. Hook up scope and look at signal.

-where is the oil pressure sending unit located and what is its voltage output range?

-- Ask your friendly Porsche tech where sensor's located. Then when you get home hook up volt meter and measure its range. At cold idle the oili pressure should be quite high so you have near max. voltage reading and then when engine up to full operating temperature you have pressure at idle of 1.0 to 1.5 or so bar. You can extrapolate or interpolate the voltage range.

-where is the coolant temprature sensor located and what is its output voltage range?

-- See response to oil pressure sensor question. Once you locate sensor you can tap into its output and check output over a range of temperatures. IIRC at least the coolant sensor is a negative coefficient sensor which I think means as the temperature rises voltage ouput decreases. The oil pressure sensor may work just the opposite, so no voltage would signal "no" oil pressure instead of extremely high oil pressure.

Sincerely,

Macster.

thanks for the reply macster , i really appreciate it .

but i was hoping for actual numbers for the sensors.

as for the asking the dealer,,,, well according to them that is proprietary information and mortals should not be allowed to see it :P

If necceary i can fax them to you as well as test points for instrument cluster/DME. Inst cluster Plug A pin 15 Can drive, Pin 30 Can Low, Pin 31 Can drive low, Pin 28 Diag K-line. Instr cluster plug B pin 5 oil pressure

-does the dashboard use a CAN-BUS system for the guages or is it just a regular signal?
Yes, can-bus but not fiberoptics- can be tested with generally avail multimeter

- where is the speed sensor located and anyidea what is the ppm (puls per mile) rate is? Engine speed or Wheel Speed sensors or both?

-where is the oil pressure sending unit located and what is its voltage output range?
Under the throttle body. Can send you the procedure if neccesary- air filter housing, air distribution housing and throttle must be removed then its easy access. They fail pretty regularly and are cheap. Worth replaceing for GP.

-where is the coolant temprature sensor located and what is its output voltage range? On the case- I'll have to check- seems like it was 0-5V but cant remember for sure

What specific issues are you haveing currently?

thanks in advance for your help!
What specific issues are you haveing currently? has this vehicle been in a wreck or..?

Oops- i didn't see that you are in Saudi Arabia. I can only assume the component arrangement is the same- i based the pin data on US production.

Can Drive Bus is made up of DME, TIP (if so equiped), PSM/angle sensor and Instr cluster

Well, I have a pretty good relationship with the several dealership service departments I use.

Chat with techs a bit if they have the time. They're good people and a pleasure to talk with a visit with.

Just recently I had my car for an inspection and bought the techs and parts counter guy lunch.

I generally get my quesions answered, though I don't abuse the access and respect their time.

Sincerely,

Macster.

porsche tech, thank you very much for the info.

U.S. is the same as middle east specs generally , only difference is we use KPH insteade of MPH as far as i know .

as for speed sensor , i was referring to vehicle speed sensor , but if there is a seperate rpm sensor then any info on that too please

i just sent you a pm if you don't mind .
