Hello, New Site Sponsor on Board

Hello,

I just wanted to start off by saying hi to everyone. We just became site sponsors and are happy to be a part of the community. Feel free to post any questions you have about our company or our products. And above all tell me what gearbox parts you are breaking and needing to replace on these cars. We're going to offer some specials in the near future, and your input on what you need will influence what we put on sale for you.

Kind Regards,

Matt

Third gear seems to be the failure point in these high hp/tq transmissions. An aftermarket, hardened gearset that doesnt cost a fortune would be a welcome addition. Glad to have you here!

Hello,
Thanks for the welcome guys.

PKG,
I guess it depends on how one defines a fortune. There's an old hot rodder's saying that goes," cheap, reliable, fast, pick two". We tend towards the reliable and fast. Our gears are expensive, but they are not any more expensive than a factory replacement 3rd AND they are stronger.

However the fact of the matter is specifically talking about the 996TT's there's a design limitation there that we can't do very much about. The reality is that 3rd gear is too narrow. Porsche realized this. Starting about 2 years ago they introduced a revised mainshaft set with a new wider third gear. The problem with this for you guys is that you can't use these new wider 3rd gears in your box unless you buy the mainshaft with accompanying 1st and 2nd gears. Right now the best option for the high powered 996TT guys is to find a takeout gearbox from a wrecked late 997TT and install it. Otherwise you're looking at upwards of $3000 to get the 1-2-3 new for those parts. I know that's probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's the honest answer.

Vivid,
I'm sorry but we don't service the tiptronics at all. It's just not part of our market. In fact, I don't know anyone who is making parts for them. If you know of any vendors for parts for them, please let me know. It would be good to add to my list for referrals for people when they ask about them. It's not our market but I'm the kind of guy who really hates to tell any customer "no". I would rather send them to another business that can tell them "yes" than to tell them what they want isn't available.

GT,

Does the above problem apply to the mighty 996 GT2? (Please say NO)

Matt.. Welcome and thanks for returning my call about the LSD for my 2003 GT2; All the information you gave me was invaluable and I have your LSD next on my list of mods after my triple adjustable JRZ's are installed at S-CAR-Go..

Hello,
Unfortunately it's true. However it really depends on a couple of things. There are a lot of cars out there with silly power levels that are staying together. There's guys running 600, 700, 800bhp through them without issue.

The first thing it depends on is the driver. How someone drives has a lot to do with how long it holds together. Like with any other gearbox at it's limit, flat foot shifting at redline and downshifting hard and using the gearbox to brake will put a lot of wear and tear on it. Eventually, given enough of that, the teeth get ripped right off the gears.

However, given the price of entry on these cars, you get fewer boy racers and dragstrip kings who really put them through those sorts of rigours. Many TT owners (and especially GT2 owners) are adult owners who have some respect for the machine and show mechanical empathy for it.

The second thing it depends on is application. This is where we are starting to see more and more failures. Guys are really starting to race these cars, and race them hard, after modifying them. Being their luxury flagship GT model, Porsche never really saw them be used that way. As a result, they don't have a spray bar or oil pump like the GT3 gearbox got. When you start racing them and running them hard for an hour or more, they get hot. Once they get hot, things break. Heat weakens things. Heat breaksdown the oil. Just today I was talking with a shop that is servicing a 700bhp TT. They told me they are pushing 300 degrees on their gearbox. That's way way too hot. It's only a matter of time until stuff starts breaking in that box. It's inevitible.

So, what you can do if you race your car is get a cooler. Get something with a heat exchanger and a pump. If you can afford it replace the center sections with a GT3 center section, spray bar, oil pump AND an external cooler. Racecars need coolers. Trying to run one, even a stock power level one, without one is just a timebomb.

Shilling80,
I am glad I could help. Thank you for the kind words. I find personal recommendations go very far in this community and really appreciate when a customer take the time to give us some kudos.

Matt, thanks for your very intelligent and comprehensive response. Don't worry about me, though, I'm that adult driver you were talking about who drives his GT2 like it's being transported from one car show to another. Absolutely no drama, and no tracking. (I'm getting an Ariel Atom as my no nonsense track car). So my third gear should last longer than me. Thanks again.

Yeah,
It's kind of like lung cancer. If you don't smoke, you aren't in the high risk users group. Sounds like the odds of you shearing a 3rd gear are next to nil. It's really only when they are driven in anger that this issue becomes something to worry about.

Good thing I'm not a Rams fan. Drop me a line if you ever want to come by. I am also almost always at the Boulder Cars n Coffee at Cino's the first Saturday of every month when it doesn't snow. I'm usually in my Aubergine '68 911t. If you are unfamiliar with it it's a good event. It's the whole spectrum from vintage to modern. Every marque is there from Porsche and Ferrari to Mini and MG.
