996TT engine rebuild
Do a pre inspection, buy it, drive it hard and service it regularly and you should have no issues.
I have almost 80km on mine, these engines are race proven and should see 250000 with no problems. Save your $$ and forget aftermarket warranty (unless it's used Porsche factory...read the fine print).
Then again, I'm a real risk taker: I ski, I go to the toilet in the middle of the night without turning the lights on. When there are no cars around, I occassionally cross the road, but always make sure that I have clean undies on...just in case.
.
Sorry dude, but based on my experience I totally disagree.
As with any car, house, pet, if something goes wrong, you simply need to access money, either credit card or worst case scenario, get a loan. But if you did have car repair $$ in the bank, your bank manager will love you for it...while he uses it to make much more $$$$ for bank executives and shareholders.

Great points made here as a whole guys.
Wow....
You could always just park it in your garage and stare at it for no cost!
It's not like your buying a KIA here! 12K in the bank may be a stretch.. Besides, all you really need is a 12K credit line on your CC
Hey PRCHE 951... Thanks for the production run info.. Didn't even know that.

Besides this is a worst case scenario. It isn't like you are gonna need 12k every year in maintenance. But I would sure hate to have 12k in credit debt to be able to get a car that I love driving again. That's just me. 12k in the bank isn't a horrible idea anyways. To each their own. There is nothing wrong with throwing an engine replacement bill on a cc or loan if you are okay with it. In reality if you get a thorough PPI done, you will probably be okay with not having large amounts of money laying around for repairs. As for me a 3k-5k good aftermarket warranty is a good idea for the repairs that you are not ready for. To me a factory warranty is asking for a claim to be denied in extreem circumstances when you really want it(ie. tranny and engine failures.) I will never buy a car I can't afford to drive every day. Parking them is worse on them than driving 50+ miles a day.

funny how they don't come out of the woodwork to tell the rest of us what went wrong. but you are so correct. problem is that they hush it up because they do not want to damage any tuners/builders rep. But if it is a consistent issue, and motors keep coming back to the same place, then there might be an issue.
also, when you build an engine you are not likely to keep it stock. why not go ahead and reinforce the bottom end at least while you are there, not price is closer to 30k, then headwork takes you up well past that, cams? more. 40K is easy.
Some engine builders are much better than others. Steven at IA was known as a good engine builder. Kevin at UMW is another. These guys know what a stock motor can handle because they have gotten hundreds of calls from people about blown engines, rebuilding, and repairing.
Kevin at UMW has told me more than once that turbo tuning kits that put out lots of torque on the low end are more likely to damage an engine than kits that produce big power on the top end.
Are you sure about this?
Salvagers still want $15-16K for the engines from wreckers

Engine Rebuild
I would shop the P dealers and other brokers in your area for the cost of an extended warranty. I did before I purchased my TT and picked up a 4 year 60k package for a little over $2k. It proved worth it when my 2nd gear started popping out after a year of ownership. Took the TT to the top dealer shop in my area who got not only the tranny covered but warranty coverage on turbo parts and part of the clutch. Especially with hi-miles ... if you can find coverage at a reasonable cost I think it is well worth it.
Darn, the prices must have come down dramatically. I remember seeing an dealer's invoice for a remanf. 996TT engine with the price in the uppers 20s.

no, the dealer just replaced an NA watercooled engine for that price. trust me there is no way a gt1 engine goes that low.
